Now if Mal would be good enough to post the link in the CY Mail on HERE for us to *read* it we can discuss.. Mal may be misquoting ( sensationalising ?) .. IF true, then of course the 'moral high ground' would be lost and it would be tantamount to accepting of the status quo.

Excellent idea, time to move forward no point in living in the past, all Cypriots can get on with there lives instead of living in limbo. Surely it would not be to difficult to set up a compensation system for all north and south.

"‘All refugees will get title deeds’ THE GOVERNMENT’S aim is to provide all refugees with title deeds and all efforts are being made in that direction, Interior Minister Neoklis Silikiotis said yesterday. “In mid 2010, procedures will start to offer 2,500 plots to refugees living in Turkish Cypriot properties,” Silikiotis explained. “The aim is to provide refugees living in houses or estates built on Turkish Cypriot land with 8,500 title deeds.” The minister didn’t exclude the possibility of expropriating the land by securing the consent of the Turkish Cypriot owners."

Dearest Dee.. re msg 6 >>He has posted the link...doh!<< Hmm, that would be why it has appeared - as requested in msg 7 - AFTER your post ... I think I can now see why it took you SO long to see those Minarets in the "rump" Roc ;) re msg 7 Mal.. thanks for posting the link to the actual article you mention.. as I suspected, your article does mislead.. 1/ >> The minister didn’t exclude the possibility of expropriating the land by securing the consent of the Turkish Cypriot owners. << 2/ >> procedures will start to offer 2,500 plots to refugees living in Turkish Cypriot properties << that doesn't mean the govt will 'nationalise' TC owned land / property without the permission of the owner.. So, it would appear the GCs STILL hold the 'moral upper hand' - they ain't proposing to take a TCs land/ property and allow the new 'owner' to sell it for private gain... BIG DIFFERENCE.. Mal could it be you were being 'sensationalist' to bump up hits ?!

If this is accurate reporting, then is this not the first signs that both sides are finally starting to realise that exchanges of land and or compensation is the only way to go if there is ever to be a settlement. How can the GC hardliners now continue to insist that everyone should have the right to return to their pre -74 properties for there to be any settlement when they are contemplating doing this? This could well be the first 'softening up' of the GC's into acceptance that exchanges/compo will take place. I also think that the new Greek president (or PM whatever he is) visiting Cyprus so soon after his parties election win could also be the start of moves towards getting both sides ready for a referendum. Apparantly he wants to maintain good relations with Turkey and wants to see a solution found.

msg 9, M6 where are these 8500 title deeds coming from? I read that GCs are being given title deeds and somehow these are going to appear from nowhere. This is not a might/if situation it's a we are going to do it statement. Perhaps you're right and these 8500 GCs are going to be moved into new properties, but equally right could be a situation where the system of exchange is put into place or the deeds are going to be issued without going through a lengthy negotiation with the original TC owners. I did find the article a little confusing I must admit but I just didn't imaging people would be moved out of their homes, ones which they might have lived in for 35 years. Mal

Dear Mal re 11 I thank you for responding - I note you didn't 'bite' on my valid comment that your header on NCFP was at best sensationalising and more likely plain inaccurate. For sure some settlement needs to be found and GCs SHOULD be encouraged to test out TRs local remedy.

Re msg 12, I think you'll find that it was in the vein of wondering what the hell the implications of the Cyprus Mail heading could be, i.e. "‘all refugees will get title deeds’ . Perhaps you're saying that I've sensationalised a sensational heading? Yes, 8500 GC families might be evicted from TC properties next year, but surely this is equally unlikely. I just got the impression they would be staying and given title deeds, because why else is "title deeds" relevant to the article? Mal

No Mal, That is NOT what the CY Mail was saying.. 8500 GC families aren't going to get 'turfed out' unless there is somewhere else for them to go.. IF you REALLY knew the FACTS, you'd know that a few TCs have decided to contact the 'Guardian' and the GCs HAVE to move out ....
