Been down to Girne police station this morning to renew my residency waited for 2 hours only to be turned away because I did not have a copy of my marriage certificate and my wifes passport. Apparently the rules have changed again, surely it would make life easier if a list could be displayed for people to read before queuing up? I was advised you need:

Photocopies of passport & wife/husband passport

Photocopies of marriage certificate

Muhtar letter

copy of Local bank statement

House kocan or contract of sale stamped by tax office, or stamped rental agreement

For first time residency you will also require:

2 passport photographs

9.20tl in stamps

I would advise you take all original paperwork as well as copies with you. I hope this has been of some help.

Shameless I went to Girne Police Station last Monday to re-new my Residency

They did not ask for a Marriage Certificate and have never asked for one.

I always take originals with me also.

The guy behind the desk said it has changed as of today and he showed us the new paperwork which he was referring to. As you are aware nothing is consistent in this country!

Not so long ago they literally didn't recognise a birth or wedding certificate and were completely puzzled if shown either. Ho hum at least they didn't ask you for your last visa slip (as they did me) or at least not yet....

I am wondering, whats the point of applying for residency if all you need to do is go over the border every 90 days and the will stamp your white paper with another 90 days, or am I missing something here?. seems to me that it saves all the hassle involved.

No Jinyx - that isnt the right way to do it!! You may get away with that a couple of times - but several people got caught out doing that and fined!!

I know they asked for our marriage certificate as the house was registered only in my husbands name. Our residency is up for renewal in December so I think I'll go armed with copies of everything I can find that may be relevant!

Actually we went this morning and they do want a copy of your stamped white visa paper!!!

Baffles me as they have all your 'ins' and 'outs' on computer anyway!

The edict was issued this morning from the Government about marriage certificates. What happens if a couple are co-habiting??? They have no paperwork, so why discriminate against those who are married?

Of course, no doubt the edict will be withdrawn tomorrow!!!!

Why do they keep changing the rules and making it more difficult?

Is it so they have something to do and therefore won't lose their jobs?

Is it because they don't really want us here?

re. marriage certificate. If they had half a brain, they'd realise that if a woman's passport is in a married name they don't need to see the certificate. They are a bit tricky about co-habitants, particularly or one of the partiners has no money in their own name.

I can confirm that when we went to Girne Police S in August, we didn't have the last visa slip & they checked the computer for ins & outs. It was in the car & we could have gone to get it. Some might throw the last visa slip away because it's full.

Eleven renewals done, never been asked for visa paper nor marriage certificate.

Our place is in both names, friends are in one name only. They have been asked for proof of marriage.

It's to do with co-habiting couples and whether or not they are financially viable if separated.

Hi Jinx

No....not the right way.

You'll soon bE happy that you have applied..... if you are ill as. I was and at Lefcosa hospital after MUCH TREATMENT AND MANY TESTS...they asked to see my passport to check residency.Guess what? as I was resident here the fee was very low i.e 50 lira!!

Certainly wouldn't have been the case if no residency stamp.

So everyone.....stop trying to be smart.

If ANYONE FROM ABROAD LIVING IN THE U.K DID THIS......AS HAPPENS.....EVERYONE WOULD BE UP IN ARMS!!

NO-ONE MADE YOU COME TO LIVE HERE!!
