Border insurance open on a Sunday?

I just read a message that border insurance is closed at the weekend.

Is this true?

Will we not be able to drive a car hired at larnaca through the border on a Sunday?

Hi Smudge, i have never had a problem crossing the border at weekend. In fact we arrived there at 3.10 am on a saturday and the border police made a phone call and two ladies turned up 10 mins later to do the insurance.

I think you'll find it is the tax place that closes at weekend, not the insurance.

Just to clarify hattikins's post, in case you are not aware - the Authorities on each side of the Green Line (best not call it a border, else we'll have you know who after us! ) issue FREE of CHARGE a substitute Road Tax document, on production of current, valid documentation for the vehicle which has been issued by the Authorities on the 'other side'.

You cannot buy insurance if you do not have this document, and you will not, therefore be allowed to pass!

The Hire Car Company may be able to arrange for you to hire a vehicle for which the substitute document has already been issued (it's valid for a year, regardless of the expiry date of the originals) - or even (perhaps for an additional fee!!) arrange for the document to be issued in advance of your visit, for the specific vehicle that you will be driving.

I have to confess that this is all supposition, I've never heard of any similar case, but it's worth asking!

It is the tax office that is closed. Insurance office are open BUT as has been pointed out by Keithcaley you can not get insurance without the tax certificate.

Thanks all.

We've been through before and only stopped at the insurance cabin with the hire documents (no tax doc as far as I remember), then paid and gone over to have our visa stamped.

Keeping fingers crossed that it goes okay this time.

It may have been my post about the weekend closure you read. I went through on a Thursday specifically to get the insurance and tax clearances because that was what I was told to do by Ismail at aone rentacars. It was they who advised me that the insurance was closed at the weekends.



Whether that actually is the case I don't know. It sounds like bodidly got hrough OK, so it may in fact not be necessary to get the insurance on a weekday.
