I have done the police station bit for renewal of my residency, can I cross the border before I have completed the rest?

If your 'year' has run out and haven't completed the paper work at Nicosia you need to return to the Police Station explaining the situation of wanting to go South, paper work in the system for renewal, and they will issue you paper work for you to travel without incurring any fines. I think this is free.

Usually they write a number on your passport which allows you to cross without any problems.
