Hi all A quick word of caution I know of a supposed solicitor in Kyrenia who is doing legal work and has no legal qualifications, they also claim to be registered with the law society in the UK, this is un true, I have checked and they aren’t The same people claim to be registered as estate agents under the new laws, this is also a lie So I urge all for your safety and piece of mind to check before you part with your hard earned cash, remember this is not the UK you need to be extra cautious with what you may take for granted in the UK 1. Check the legal qualifications of your solicitor, ask for proof and check them out 2. Check your estate agent is registered, again ask to see their registration, not their company registration the one issued by the estate agents society, then check with the society that their registration is genuine Good advice from qualified, competent, professionals gives you the best chance of a happy, successful outcome Good luck Meddmale

The lawyers who are registered with the Bar of TRNC are called Advocates. There is no such thing as a Solicitor in Cyprus. It can be very fatal to assume that an Advocate is a Solicitor. Their legal duties can be very different. ismet

Meddmale, If you are so confident in your research then name and shame the company. If you can not, or will not, name and shame then this posting is useless as the advice you give is that which all buyers should checkout anyway.

Thanks for the correction as you correctly state advocates in Cyprus and not Solicitors but call them what you like you need to check they have the correct qualifications and are registered with the bar council As far as the information and advice being “useless” I don’t think any good advice, how ever often reconfirmed is useless I will add this to the pot…. Ask you’re Advocate if they are a share holder in any estate agent, because some aren’t just share holders, some are major share holders One other thing there is an Advocate who claims to be registered with the UK law society, funny thing is if you search their web site his name isn’t there Meddmale

There is a difference in the UK between barristers and solicitors. Barristers (also called Counsel) are 'called to the bar' and can call themselves barristers once they pass their academic courses i.e Bar Vocational Course (BVC). A NC based advocate who has qualified as a barrister in the UK may have had no further UK legal experience than that. In the UK they would then have to find a set of chambers that will give them a trainee placement for at least 12 months with no guarantee of a full time place. Barristers are self employed and only get paid if they get work. Solicitors on the other hand have to pass the academic courses i.e. Legal Practice Course (LPC) which is very simular to the BVC and then complete 2 years on the job training as a trainee solicitor before qualifying and being admitted to the roll of the Law Society. Once admitted solicitors have to renew their practising certificate annually with the Law Society and be covered by legal indemnity insurance. Newly qualified solicitors have to work within an established law firm and be supervised by a senior partner in that firm. A UK qualified but non UK based solicitor i.e. NC advocate would be unlikely to renew their UK practising certificate and thus no longer be on the Law Society register. If they simply completed the academic courses and not the 2 year training with a firm they would not be on the Law Society register either.

The allegedly offending advocate was never on the site to which you refer to Meddmale, and ABAG have begun to ask questions to the Law Society as regards this person. This particular advocate also allegedly said that they worked out of quite a famous "Chambers", which was also proven to be untrue as their name did not appear amongst the lawyers working out of that particular chambers SSP ABAG xxxx http://latchfords.spaces.live.com/
