I would like feedback from ANYONE interested in outdoor flat green bowling, and indoor short mat bowling. If we can get the numbers there may be the possibility of both facilities being operational in the very near future. How far would you travel for such facilities? Do you have your own set of bowls? How often would you use such facilities? If this gets off the ground then there are spin off's like games nights, party nights and visits to and from other bowling clubs in Cyprus.

I am moving to Alsancak in December. I have done indoor short mat bowling so might be interested in joining. Bowls probably too heavy to bring with me so would have to find some after I arrive, keep me posted on progress via email on s_m_wredden@hotmail.com if you like.

I have lived here for 7 years and this has been talked about on several occassions. In fact sunset beach put down a single lane some while ago. I would play probably 3 times a week and travel as far as is necessary. I don't have my own woods at present but would willingly buy a set at Christmas when I am in England

Very interested! My wife and I both played lawn bowls for quite a few years in South Africa. We have our woods here gathering dust! I am a qualified umpire in South Africa. We are in Lapta and would probably be prepared to travel as far as Catalkoy westwards.

Hi All. Thanks for your replies. In response to s.m.Wredden better bring your bowls with you as there are no bowls suppliers here in the north. "Jaybee" Possibility of a 5 lane outdoor green being built. "matula" your skills could be put to good use and the green may hopefully be built in Lapta. Ask amongst your friends etc see if they would be interested in bowling. Will keep you all posted via this forum.

Can anyone here build anything flat and level enough? (What's a spirit level?) Seriously though, I'm sure it would be popular if priced right. The Expat community are mostly of the bowls playing age group and I bet hundreds of them used to play before moving here, not to mention the holiday visitors. Good luck, Ozbey.

I was a keen bowls player and have qualified as both an umpire and a coach. Bowls is not just for old folk by the way. In our area there is a very large young contingent 12 years and up and some excellent bowlers among them. I and my family would be very happy to play over in TRNC. It has to be better than a perishing north easterly wind coming over the bowling green wall. Liz

Hi Nutty Nora My husband and I live in the Lapta area and would be prepared to travel anywhere West of Girne. We have not played seriously but would be very interested now that we are living here and have time on our hands. We dont possess the appropriate footwear or woods but would be prepared to purchase them from the UK if necessary.

what a cracking idea hippo, you know it will lie empty for ages before someone turns it into a huge yapi market. The trouble is Cypriot mentality would mean a huge rent would be asked by Mr Astro. Perhaps if someone was to approach him and suggest that he sets it up as a business, that might work as an all year round venue as a//c is in already

Hi All Going on a fact finding trip, to Aphrodite Bowling Club, later this week with a local businessman who is interested in developing the outdoor bowling green. Will let you know the outcome of the visit. As you can see there has been a good response in this limited forum however there must be lots of people who do not have acces to this web site that would be interested in taking up bowling. So spread the word to your friends. The more interest we can generate the greater the possibility of this project coming to fruition.

Hi All We went to Aphrodite Bowls Club at Erimi today. The purpose of the visit was so that our businessman could see for himself what building the club entailed. Not sure if you all know what great facilites Aphrodite Bowling Club have, it was perhaps one of the best clubs on the island to show him. He was suitably impressed and is now going to contact a builder to get plans drawn up. Again as soon as we have any more news we will post it here.

I suggested that to a local 5 years ago. It would be ideal but just didnt know how to go about it and unless that was your job in the UK to building and maintaining an indoor bowling green who on earth would do it cos the locals wouldnt have a clue.

Message 30 nuttynora im sure if you are such a believer in this venture you shouldnt need any investors from cyp44,i read it as you was offering a service and a great day out for all,its a investment on your behalf,VENTOUR. but i suppose i can understand your worries about investing your money into somthing in north cyprus, and hoping the ex pats will use and make this venture work, after all the interest shown,,but come on,we all know north cyprus and the dreamers living here,no 1 wants to put there money where there BIG mouths are..DO THEY? thank god im not bowler. but i think what a great idea.

I played competitive ten pin bowling for 20 years until 1997,when I took early retirement .I am left with swollen knees which I think is because of this sport but I would like to do bowls if there becomes a facility here. Not sure if I would take to it ! Any opinions from the experts as to whether my ten pin bowling experience would help! kind regards,Sue.

susanstrud Unfortunately having played ten pin bowling will not aid you in playing outdoor/shortmat green bowling. But if this venture gets off the ground we would love you to join as I'm sure you would enjoy the game. Scruff The green, if built, will be in the Lapta area. There will be sunshades at each end and if floodlights are installed we shall be able to play after the sun has gone down. The bowling has worked very well in the south of the island which has a host of clubs, and I see no good reason why it should not work here.

Re message 35 Susanstrud. At our club in South Africa an Austrian couple joined who were skittles players. It took a long time to calm down their delivery and they were in the ditch more often than not but they persevered and both became quite good green bowlers. Pace is not all that is needed.

There are currently four Bowls Clubs in the south; the one mentioned, at Erimi, two located in Pafos and one in Coral Bay (15km from Pafos). Two more clubs will be opening shortly: a new club in Coral Bay (May) and one in Chlorakas (November), not far away. All but one are owned by Hotels. In addition, the Athena Hotel, in Pafos has 22 rinks and hosts many friendly games form visisting UK clubs - as do the other clubs. The Atehna hosted the European Championships in 2007 and 2009 and will be holding the Atlantic Championships in 2011 and the Champion of Champion event in 2012. For a small island, Cyprus has done wonderfully well in attracting major world championships. I am sure there would be a BIG take up if facilites were available in the north.

Never played bowls but have played boules which is great. Would be interested in playing bowls. Why not combine it with a boules court, this does not need much space and is also played on fine gravel so would not need much maintainance.

If you need ant advice on costs etc. of setting up a bowls club in Cyprus, I am sure there are bowlers in the south who could give you some advice. The new Coral Bay club opens on Sunday; very impressive 40m x 40m, eight rink green. SKY will be broadcasting an All (British) Star bowls event from Pafos 21-23 Sepetmber, first prize £25,000 I am told. 2011 Pafos hosts the World Bowls Atlantic Championship (not sure which part of the Atlantic, Cyprus is in?) and 2012 World Bowls Champion of Champions event.
