My wife and I are looking to rent JAN to APR 2010. Have any of you any views on whether to use estate agents or look privately? We will be over to view beginning of November.

If you use a good estate agents they will help you with any problems. If you have problems with the property etc they sort things out ie plumbing, electric, machines not working(aircon, washing machine/dish washer)neighbour disputes etc. There are a few places in my street that are managed by Sunbeams Estate agents http://www.sunbeamsestate.com email info@sunbeamsestate.com office 0392 822 39 10. mobile 533 849 89 50. I have met the tenants and owners and all are happy with their services. I also know people who rent privately and the owners don't help when things go wrong.Sometimes the owners are abroad and it's difficult to contact them when there is a problem. Hope this helps

It definitely depends on if you have a reliable agent and not one who charges twice over, ie inflated charges for any repairs carried out. A friend of mine had to have a water pump replaced and when he came over and checked out prices he had paid 100 pounds over the odds.

as Warren Buffet would stay - don't go with the pack - think independantly..... Or as my old Uncle Percy used to say "yow'm moving to where ? - you must have a friggin' screw loose...." Or as I would say: Take your time, rent long term, its v hot in summer and cold in your villa in the winter, litter is a major problem, as is lack of infrascructure, cost of living increaing and interest on savings decreasing. Not much shopping choice and what there is, is often more expensive than UK.. Many many Brits are leaving because the place hasn't met with their expectations... Listen to people, visit home buyer's pressure group meetings... and, if it sounds too good to be - well you know the rest.....

I know a number of people that rent privately, and generally have no trouble getting anything fixed if things go wrong. I don't think estate Agents are any more helpful, in fact generally once they've got you sorted in a house, they ae no longer interested.

Sorry Stellasstar1, as the owner of a very reputable rental agency i think your comment unfair. I am a small personal business that without my long term rentals would have found it hard to survive in the current tourist market, or should i say lack of. Please do not make such a general comment. If you have personal experience of an agent acting "no longer interested" then name and shame THEM, please do not generalise all Agents the same..........they don't estate agents!
