The approval of website addresses using non-Latin characters has been described as the "biggest technical change to the internet" since its creation 40 years ago. Internet addresses using scripts such as Hebrew, Hindi and Korean will be available by mid-2010 after their use was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board at a meeting in Seoul, South Korea. Internationalised Domain Name (IDN) fast track process begins. If the applications meet certain criteria, including government and community support and a stability evaluation, the applicants will be approved to start accepting registrations for domain names. More than half the world's internet users do not use English or a Latin-based language as their first language and this move will see around 100,000 new characters available for use in IDNs. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20091030/ttc-nod-for-non-latin-web-addresses-e1d36ba.html

A retrograde move. Before the ills of this world can be tackled, every person in it must be able to speak the same language.

Yes - why should the chosen 'one' language be English if more than half the world's population don't speak English?

mal, The intriguing thing about that (to me, at any rate) is that when you hover the cursor over any of the 'hieroglyphic' hyper-links on that page, you get the address of the link in English displayed on the status bar at the bottom of the screen... Cool!

Next they will stop English being the International language of Air Traffic and pilots - now that should be fun when you have an English only speaking pilot wanting to land at Birmingham and air traffic can only speak Urdu, but hey, why not lets not stop progress - maybe they will be able to Google it between them and land via Internet assistance, glad I won't be on it mind! Despite all efforts - the world continues to turn!

I think they should do away with all languages and then we could converse telepathically. It does work. I am now going to speak to one of you telepathically to respond to this post.

Waddo..Except Air FRance pilots who at Paris Charles de Gaulle only speak in French to ATC..All other airlines have to speak English.Half the time the other pilots just do not know what to expect from the french pilots when they are on the taxi ways, hence the increase in near misses on the ground involving French aircraft...

Jetski, all pilots speak English on approach! The problem is the danger on the ground from all non french speaking pilots not fully understanding what is happening around them. Whilst not agreeing with the internet having to be one language there is good reason for air traffic to be just one language. I can remember an incident at Heathrow whilst waiting to taxi, It was at the time amusing but could have had serious consequencies. An Aeroflot pilot was having great difficulty in understanding ground traffic control, he kept repeating what the ground traffic was telling him but clearly was not sure whether he should taxi left or right. Anyone who remembers the worst plane accident in history at Tenerife will understand the potential of this. The problem at Charles de Gaulle came to light in 2000 and I thought that they were ordered to stop speaking French then. English has become the air language, it is too late to change now! Col

msg 15 says, "you get the address of the link in English displayed on the status bar at the bottom of the screen" I still get the Chinese characters. The point is that Chinese character domains, for example, are being used already so what are these big changes all about? As for north Cyprus, they're at a standstill - same speed, same price "broadband" for the last 4 years! Mal
