Last week my friend who was visiting us from England had a mega reaction to five mosquito bites on her ankles. We bought anti-biotics and cream from the chemists but eventually had to go to Casualty at Girne Hospital. She saw a doctor within ten minutes who instructed the nurse to burst the blisters, clean the wounds and apply dressings. She had to go back to the hospital every other day to have the dressings changed and each time received the very best of care which was given free of charge even though six visits were required. On one visit she left her handbag behind and didn't miss it for six hours. When we returned to the hospital her bag was waiting for her. The security man insisted she check the contents against a list he had made and nothing was missing. Her purse contained money and her credit cards. I know living in this country is not without its frustrations but I can't help but wonder if the same thing would have happened in an English hospital.

Exactly what I said on the other thread currently running on this subject---only, apparently, to be completely ignored. Some people are only interested in negatives. The following is not meant to be negative but a comparison between UK and TRNC. In the instance I quoted, I returned two days later to the UK. The next day with doctors still closed I went to A&E as instructed by my chemo nurse for another antibiotic. It took 4 hours just to get a single drug already requested by the nurse. They make sure a triage nurse sees you within 20 minutes to keep the figures looking good and then ignore you for 3 hrs 40 minutes!

Karanfil So happy your friend got her bites treated, I did say the treatment was great and the people were wonderful, but what breezyboy misunderstood as complaining was the language barrier, when you walk in and they can see immediately what is wrong then its not too much trouble conversing but it was because they couldnt see a problem with me that's where I was stuck, Nothing to do with the Service, please read the posting properly

Smithy Forget it ,you just cant win. If you warned people that a bridge over a ravine in Girne had fallen, and for motorists to take care, you would be accused of being negative ,anti NC,whinging. You would be told that its much worse in UK where Mr x saw loads of bridges fall into ravines. Reminds one of the Soviet Congress ,when Stalin made speeches glorifying the soviet achievements, anyone who didnt offer rapturous applause was off to Siberia, and the sycophants that did, had to clap till hands raw in order not to be seen to be the first to stop clapping. In future, to stay out of bother , dont post anything unless its nice.

Smithy See, thats how its done. Billyboy. Having three relatives who are nurses ,and although I cant compare them to the nurses in Lefkosa, I can say they are very caring, matter of fact one in particular I think is too emotional and has been known to burst into tears after a bad shift like when someone has died. They would be the first to tell you not to let bad nursing go unchallenged and to use the complaints procedures . Good nurses are not protective of bad nurses as they have to compensate, and I am told that complaints are taken seriousely. If you get no satisfaction from the nurses superior, the next, and usual stage is to compose a letter to the Chief Executive of your local hospital. I have used this procedure myself to complain about a doctor and did get an apology, without it going to the CE.

I do feel the main problem is far to many people here in UK go to casualty when they could wait to see their own GP I really do think that if folk had to pay a small contribution for the out of hours services they might think first this charge would be refunded if the case proved that the out of hours service was needed

girne 29 i shall give you a small idea as to why i do not like or trust some of the nhs...a few years ago, i was in hospital for a small procedure......i wont go into details..... the procedure did not go as i had anticipated, and i was very upset.. i did complain and was seen by the top proffessor of the hospital..... do you know what he said to me "i am not looking forward to my old age, as i see what is coming out of the medical schools now"....that did it for me..... ................................................. i also have family member thats are nurses, both in cyprus and the UK......

billyboy Then I stand corrected , You know the procedure and unlike me can compare the two health services, if you say the TRNC system is superior then I accept that. I have only ever been in UK hospitals and can only commend the care I recieved there which is why I stand up for the NHS .My problem was with one stubborn doctor who against advice put me at risk. However I must also give credit to the Doctor who overruled him,and the nursing staff, who took care of me. I was maybe a bit defensive, as your description of uncaring people did not match what I know both of my family and staff who cared for me. Obviously you are in a better position to compare the UK and NC nursing staff ,having nursing family in both camps. When comparing notes ,what do the nurses put the superior care in NC down to.?Do our nurses have more of a workload, or is it down to not so good training?

I don't know about "wonderful" but it's certainly good. The A & E especially as service is prompt and efficient and MRSA seems to be unknown. But 'smithy' is right about language being something of a problem. Perhaps my wife and I have been lucky but the doctors and nurses there have been able to mostly understand us. Where we have sometimes struggled in translation there has always been someone else (probably a London Cyp) to help. Just ask loudly....does anyone speak English ?
