| TURKISH Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat says he “no longer regrets” the 1983 declaration of the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ (TRNC), despite media reports that he cried at the time of its establishment because he believed it would be damaging to his community’s interests. | Talat was right in his approach but if you aside everything and consider his declaration in isolation, it sounds odd that he stood for election and was elected as the President of a State that he opposed. This is what his political opponents are doing which is all nonsense. ismet |

| Ismet As an aside, what are your thoughts on the possibility of Talat stepping down before the Presidential elections. From what I have heard on the streets (and coffee shops) is that it is a very real possibility that his UBP successor would finally put paid to any compromised solution. I have had the privilege of seeing Denktas and Talat in the flesh and to me Denktas, despite his age, still has the drive and enthusiasm that he had when he was president. On the other hand Talat seems to have aged significantly and no where near as dynamic that Denktas was and still appears to be. AJ |
