I am getting conflicting advice about this. Some people say if you take one across from UK you have to have it rechipped and some say you dont. Who is right. Also I am looking at a TV/DVD combi. My understanding is they dont sell these combi TV's in NC. One supplier told me they wont work properly because of the fluctuations in current/electric so you need to buy a TV and a seperate DVD player. Is this correct because I really wanted a combi

Linus - cannot help you regarding digiturk, etc. but can say that it's perfectly fine to take a TV from UK. We did it and have had no problems. We also took a DVD player, but it is, obviously, a separate one.

Hope this helps.

Linus, when I had digiturk there was a monthly fee too, around 32 ytl if I remember correctly.

We had BBC Prime, constant repeats, and a few other satellite channels like RealityTV, National Geographical, History etc. But beware, there were also many repeats on some of those.

TV & DVD combo work fine no problems .There is duty to pay to cover TRNC version of TV licence .Though you do see TV shaped boxes on the carousel at Ercan and no customs man

wanderer. is this just a one off fee at the airport. Do you know how much it is and do you have to pay any additional fees annually ie licence fee. We go across a few time a year. Any suggestions on TV in terms of one of payment and no monthly fees

Linus,

The best satellite for legal, free-to-air English language programmes is Nilesat - you will need a standard digital set-top-box, and preferably a 1 metre dish.

Have a read ALL about it here: - http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/satellite.asp - and here: -

http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/television.asp

For watching DVDs and satellite, ANY TV will work fine, it's only if you want to watch the local channels that there could be a compatibility issue, and with modern TVs, this is getting rarer - you will have more difficulty understanding the Turkish

Hi

The 'licence' or duty when the TV is imported is 60 Turkish Lira and that's payable to the Customs Man.

Cheers

Dear Linus

re msg 1

My advice..

Do NOT buy a TV capable of playing DVDs in the UK and ship it out ...

Most UK DVD players are NOT multi-region, so any DVDs you buy in CY which could be region 3 ( UK is region 2) will not playback :(

If you going to use only the SCART / HDMI connections - i.e. not use the TV for local TV reception - any tv is fine.. but if you DO want to view local TV, via an aerial connection - you must buy a multi-std TV.. as the picture will be received, but NOT the sound.

A crfty way to watch local TV, via the aerial, is to buy a local video player, use it via the scart and then there'll be no need to 'chip' the TV - as the tuner is by passed ;)

We put a £129 19inch LCD telly from Currys rapped in towels and bedding in the suitcase. We told them when we checked in so that they would take care.

When we reached our apartment, we plugged it in and kept our fingures crossed. It worked perfectly! No problems what so ever. We also took accross a £13 DVD from ASDA and it plays all the copies perfectly.

We did take out the insurance with Currys (which includes the telly getting smashed for an extra £25) but to us the total cost was better than paying the prices quoted out there. We took the insurance out so that if it did get damaged, we could take it home and get it replaced without a problem.

We only use an internal arial with the TV but that works OK too. Not much choice on the TV but to be honest, we are out too much to watch lots of TV.

Thank you guys for all tour feedback. I will just use the combi to watch dvds bought from the UK while on holiday.

I am planning to bring out a small tv in a suitcase with other goods probable total value about £250. Will there be a problem coming through Larnaca airport and the border crossing with these goods or not and will there be any duty to pay

Regards

Hi again Linus. We brought a tv and dvd player via Larnaca few years ago, left it in its box, in our case. No problem whatsoever. No problems at border (I think any problems tend to occur going North to South). In fact, we were totally unaware of any duty that might be payable, although this may well be the case. Anyway, just brought it through.
