I apologise if I have missed a thread, but I have been in Thailand and away from the internet for a month.

I refer to the general market called Altaylar that was approximately opposite Starlings at Lapta. It sold the best meat (by far) I ever found in NC and it has closed down while I was away.

Does anyone know if they have moved somewhere else, or even if the butcher is employed elsewhere?

Alternatively, where do I go now for good rump and ribeye steak? I have tried Yalcin 2 at Alsancak (opposite the Golden Lady) which has been recommended before on Cyprus44, but I was not impressed - their meat is not hung long enough.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. It was obvious he has been in trouble for a few weeks, his meat stocks were getting less and less, I can't understand it as he was really popular.

Thanks for the tip off about Yalcin, I was going to try there.

I always go to the Pork Shop as the meat is excellent and noticed this week he had some nice dark sirloin, I bought a small piece and it wasn't bad at all, but they aren't full scale butchers, so I'm after recommendations as well.

There is a butcher in Alsancak village, coming past the post office on your left, then Cenap and the car park by Dolfin and its in the next set of shops on the left hand side before you turn right into the road leading to Dolmaci's and the main road.My neighbour goes here and says it's good, its not long been and i will go up in the week to have a look.

Jacktheladett

Please don't be put off by my comment on Yalcin. Everybody's tastes are different and their meat is perfectly edible - just not as good as Altaylar.

I like my meet dark, almost brown - the current fashion for fresh bright red meat is not to my taste. I watched the butcher in Tempo (he did not realise I was looking) spray the beef mince with a bright red dye to make it 'more attractive'.

It's one of those strange modern trends. Most people I talk to like well hung meat, but the butchers don't seem to understand that any more. I think that it is driven by the supermarkets and their mania for freshness, so the independent butchers feel they must compete on the same terms. In the same way you cannot buy good 'sociable' Brie any more.

It's ok, Jovial, my thoughts are the same as you on the meat front, thats why I mentioned the beef in the Pork Shop. I might do back in there and see what they can get.

(I hope I haven't missed a post while I have been away in the Philippines.)

The butcher from the defunct Altaylar has now opened a new shop. He assures me that he is using the same suppliers and maintaining his meat hanging policies, and I have just bought some rump steak that looks beautiful. If he keeps to the previous Altaylar standard then I will happily recommend his meat to everyone.

The new shop is located approx. 200 metres after Starlings (heading towards Karsiyaka) and on the opposite side. If you like well hung, well kept beef then give him a try. His lamb is pretty good aswell. He doesn't keep much in the counter but tell him what you want and he will cut it to your requirements from the fridge.

Ibos's Butchers in Alsancak is very good (the same owner owns Ibo's fast food restraunt), excellent quality and always good fresh meat.

They will do any cut or quantity even if you anly want small quantities noting is too much trouble.

We get excellent service there and highly recommend them.

Mike - I know the whereabouts of this butcher's has been put on here before, but could you please give directions (from Fast Food) in Alsancak, i.e. if I'm standing in front of the restaurant, say, looking in, right or left?

Many thanks.

There's a butcher's shop at the side of Mr Pound in Girne, just before the Lefkosia roundabout. He sells aged beef, it's about the best I ever had, also the dearest. But as the saying goes "you get what you pay for"

John hi,

Panic not! The butcher from Altaylar has opened a new shop in Lapta, I was in there yesterday same excellent quality. It is in the same row of new shops as the chemist just passed Starling a little way passed where Altaylar used to be on the same side of the road. Keep your eyes peeled and you won't miss it.
