Chrysopolitissa is a small church in the centre of the town of Kyrenia. It is evidently built roughly with old materials. A centuries old marble cross with Jesus was a show piece - indeed, was... Like so many ancient and medieval artefacts in Cyprus it has disappeared. It must have happened between March 16, 2009 (when I photographed it) and two weeks or so ago, when I noticed the disappearance during one of the Kyrenia Walks. Let's hope the Girne Belediye removed this marble artefact from the wall and keeps it in a safe place. But I fear...

The same church, inside. Used as a dump, until one of the windows in the southern wall was closed (by the Belediye?): http://is.gd/4Ww8l No comment.

Kyrenia: more theft or vandalism. We'll never find out who did it (between 1899 and now), but here's another example. Camille Enlart, the all-time expert on medieval Cyprus) visited and draw the Chrysopolitissa church in 1899. I followed the text and drawings in his book (Gothic art in Cyprus) through Cyprus to check what has changed and disappeared in about a century - here's the proof. A complete pillar - gone. Unfortunately I can make a long list. http://is.gd/4WxTW

Jetski Msg 10

I think you're the one with the problem; your name is 'S'?, you can't work out whether you're male or female, forgot whether you've married or not, and to top it all off, suffer from being an E-mail flasher!

RE msg 13, Brinsley: Is this really necessary, Richard? It's so tiring. Why don't you start a new thread?

Hans - will you check with the Belediye to see if the marble cross has "oficially" been removed and let us all know?

I am under no obligation to provide any more info regarding myself than I've done already. Many on the board know who I am, and only those who I choose to inform. Needless to say you are not one of them.

Dutch,

My TC friend lives opposite this church, she notice the cross missing about 2 months ago and enquired at the correct dept, and was told that it was loose and they feared it would be stollen, so it has been removed until it can be refitted correctly.

RE msg 18, kiwikid: Thank you for your feedback! Today I called the Belediye and I hope to meet one of the authorities Thursday. I hope to get the same answer and I would also like to know where the cross is stored - just to make sure. Thanks again! I'll update this thread as soon as I know more.

Thought you'd like to know. I was down there this morning, and the crucifix has been returned.

Thanks, ianwfs! I noticed this also when doing the Kyrenia Walks in the past weeks. It's now firmly set in cement and hopefully will remain where it belongs - in the front wall of the Chrysopolitissa church!
