Can anyone please tell me what the benefits of taking out residency are! it seems to me it just causes you hassel and has a cost every year. I have checked with immigration and it is quite acceptable to cross to the south evey 90 days. You are then not subject to fines etc for residency being out of date as can somtimes happen through no fault of your own!!!

Thats what they say now but the rules are changed every five minutes here. If you overstay and leave eg go to turkey or the uk you will be fined for every day you have overstayed. Also not every policeman gives you a 90day visa you could be turned back from the greek side and not allowed back home!! Surely once a year is not too bad to be legal.

That is not logical! if you think of all the people with holiday Villa's visiting maybe every 5 weeks they don't even consider residency. I can't belive that if you did not have the residency stamp in your passport that you would ever be challeneged! The problem seems to be in taking out residency once you have done this you can be fined etc, have you ever heard of anyone being turned away who has not got the stamp in the passsport? i.e. you are jst a tourist as far as they are concerned.

if you overstay the number of days written on your entry visa then they will fine you when you leave. Usually you get 90 days but sometimes this can be low, e.g. 20 days, if they believe you are "playing the system." You are right however, once you become a resident then missing the annual renewal can bring much more severe penalties, I believe.

jbm It is true to say that customs rarely check on entry visas, but on occasion they do have clampdowns and you will not automatically be reisued with a 90 day visa. Your choice to take the risk, but if you get caught you will find yourself with fines far exceeding the cost of doing your residency and maybe even prevented from re-entering the TRNC. Doing residency is a pain but it is only once a year and you can at least come and go as you please without the 'worry' of being caught out at the border. Paul

jbm2009...Everyone is allowed to stay in the TRNC for up to 3 months. Then you must either leave the island or apply for Residency. As you say some people are visiting every five weeks then they are quite within their rights not to have to have Residency. As previously said above 'one' may get away with going across to the South and getting a further90 day Visa again and again. BUT come the time when you wanted to leave through Ercan then it is more than probable that you would encouter a fine for overstaying your Visa entitlement. If someone is living here permanently then it becomes a hassle to hopefully get the Visa renewed at a crossing every 90 days. If someone lives here full time then they should accept the rules of their chosen country. We ARE after all visitors here and should respect that.

What would happen if you have temporary residency, then decide you would like to move to another country but return here periodically for holidays, visit friends etc. Do you have to come back every year to renew your residency (even though you are no longer living here). Is it true that once 'in the system' you cannot get out of it. Is there any department that would know the answer - or do the rules change all the time? Thanks Joan

joanie1.....If someone moved to another country and the Temporary Residency had expired when they returned to the TRNC for a visit, they would be given a 90 day visitors Visa and they would then have to leave after this time. You cannot have Temporary Residency and not renew every year.

It is definite that the rules change periodically, but it depends why you are here. When there was a bit of a blitz up, some people were getting only 7 days on their passports on re-entry form the south. I actually had it happen to me, and said 'You have missed my visa' and then the guy crossed out the 7 days and put the proper stamp on it. If one lives here permanently, it is not worth tyring to do it any other waythan 'residency' but...... the rules have change don that. With 'Temporary Residency' you may not be out of the country for more than 3 months (in bits!) or your residency is null and void, and now with Permanent Residency, you are not allowed out for more than 6 months (which is a bit of a contradiciton to 'permanence'. But next week/month/year this could change again. If you just want to visit now and then, don't bother with the hassle, but just remember that the air fare for escaping is more than getting your residency. It is a matter of personal choice, but it real

sorry - really a matter of how long you wish to stay. Short term, don't bother with residency, but long term go for it, as it is the easiest option - honestly.

I would be the first to agree that the residency is an expensive and ridiculous con and don't understand why anybody who has bought a property here should need this. The only problem, however, with not having residency is that, without it, you cannot get a TRNC driving licence. If you are here for more than 90 days, your car insurance is not valid without a local licence.
