Hi,

We are moving to Cyprus soon and will be looking to purchase a car.

Ideally I would like to purchase a car that I can travel in both North and South without problem.

Could someone please advise how to go about this.

Many thanks

you can travel from north to south without any problem, the only thing you have to do is take an extra insurance when you cross the check point for a month or over the cost is 17 euros a month - show your driving license and car papers and your insurance took in the north -if your live in the north - for the south it is the same obligation -

can you do the same with a hire car, reason i am asking is we need to go south for furnature and are confused about the rules. we thaught we would have to leave the car at the border and get a taxi across and back again. we want to see what the prices are like in Ikea

no, you cannot drive with a hire car from north to south - but you can from a south rented car to north - taking an insurance at the border - yes, cross by foot and take a taxi is possible but then how are you going to manage to carry your shopping back -

Hi sylvie,

Thanks for replying. I will be moving to north so will be visiting the south. Do you have to telephone an insurance company in the south for this, or do you pay for it through your own insurance or do you pay the extra insurance at the border (sorry if I'm sounding a bit thick but this is all new to me).

Thanks,

Once you have sorted out a TRNC registered car, you drive to the Metahan crossing in Lefkosa. Once through the TRNC side you take your car docs and Licence to the first little office on the GC side. There you will be given an MOT/Tax document (they may give your vehicle a cursory inspection) which you can take to one of the insurance offices and buy insurance (17 Euro per month).

The MOT/Tax office is only open until 2PM, and you can only do it at the Metahan crossing. The document lasts for 12 months, and once you have it you can buy insurance/cross at any of the crossings.

Also remember that the MOT/Tax office is only open Monday to Friday; not a weekends.

For parking you will have to use the Ledra Street or Ledra Palace crossings. These crossing points are foot only and parking is in streets around the crossing points.

Taxis can be picked up at the Ledra Palace crossing easier than Ledra Street.

at ledra palace you have a car park, you paid for the day 2 YTL , and someone is looking after your car - make sure that your taxi comes back to pick you up at a meeting time it will be easier -

avril,

previous posts to mine answered to your question - to make it clear -

when you buy a car in north cyprus you will have to get an insurance in north cyprus of course, when you want to cross to south and other insurance is asked by the greek cypriot - it is the same on the other way round !!!

when are you moving and where ?

Hi Avril

Perhaps you should be asking how much cars cost North versus South.

And recommended makes of budget type cars.

It would be interesting to know for other people that should they come out for a few months to N.Cyprus, imagine cheaper to buy a car/then resell then to hire one for that long??

Hi,

Thanks everyone for responding to my query.

Sylvie, we are coming out towards the end of July. Our property is in Karsiyaka, not far from the Cypriot School.

Where are you based (do you live in Cyprus permanently)?

Hi Sylvie,

are you living in the middle of the village or in the mountains?

I have friends who are living direct at the new bypass and the cars are driving now nearly through their garden...

For many years we did not have any road names on the island...

The letters arrived to the local coffee shop and you had to collect them from there,,,

Or one of your neighbours took them home and invited you then for a coffee to hand over the post,,

A very nice time..
