I finally have decided to take up some scuba diving. Which is the best place to go to learn and then dive weekly? I see many are in the Girne/ Lapta area and I guess they are similar.

I agree with message4 Drew and Caroline and the rest of the team are very professional. My young nieces went with them 2 years ago and they were excellent, very patient and the kids loved them. So its got to be Turtlebay Dive centre at the Sempati Hotel.

Assim and his team at Amphora have a great reputation Amphora is the only BSAC inspected school in the North as well as being PADI. We have had no cutomer complaints since he started his business many years ago. Tom IAH Ltd

Drew and Caroline - Sempati. My son has dived all over the world and enjoys going to visit them and dive with them when he is over here. OK the scenery over here isnt as good as some seas, but if you have knowledgeable instructors you can just go on learning!

Corbo - Why are you taking up diving now it's late autumn? Have you checked out Red Sea package diving holidays - checked the Net? You can easily be put off for good by starting off/learning in less than comfortable conditions and all clobbered up with thick suit and hood! Have you had a 'diver's medical' examination? Any reputable club, or school, should be able to point you in the right direction - in fact, they should insist you have passed one, and sight it, before letting you dive - even pool lessons.

I'm over for the Winter and it semed to be the thing to do as I have meant to do it for ages. I certainly won't be going to the Red Sea for some time if ever..maybe one day..but probably the Indian ocean more likely.

Hi Corbo, You only need to fill a medical form yourself unless you tick yes to any of the medical questions, unless you are going for dive master then you need to go and have a full medical at a specialist dive doctor or your own doctor or one here which the school can send you to. We dived twice last week near the power station and it was very good I dive with North Cyprus Scuba Centre Cengiz's number is 05338683165 call him and he will speak to you and explain everything you need to know. Regards. David

Thanks David. I do take a few tablets for blood pressure and I guess this may affect matters a bit. I think I asked my doctor some time back and he thought it no problem though.

Hi Corbo, This will need a medical certificate from your doctor, but this is only if you answer yes to any of the medical questions but make sure you have this before going to any diving club or it will just cause problems because they will refuse to take you on the open water course, which is the start of your diving courses but if all the answers are no on the form then you can dive. Hope this helps. David

Corbo: Please make sure you have a proper (BSAC) diver's medical examination in UK - especially since you have just admitted you suffer from high blood pressure; e.g., At what stage of exertion does abnormally high blood pressure occur? - Get it checked! Remember that, even in pool training - never mind deeper depths in open water, you'll be breathing compressed air from a cylinder/regulator - so you don't want to risk any sort of aneurysm. With your condition you need to be talking to a doctor who is conversant with diving related problems, so should be able to point out any specific risk(s) to you, personally.

Corbo They are based in the Sempati Hotel in Lapta. If coming from Girne you turn right at Flippers Holiday village, then take the first right and it is down there on the left.

My husband and I learnt with Cengiz from Alagadi this summer and have to say, he was very patient and helpful and if it wasnt for him, not sure I would have got through it. I tried previously in Kenya and gave up as I wasnt comfortabvle with the instructor and in view of this, I have to say Cengiz is very good and reassuring. Good luck you will enjoy it very much!!!

Re Msg 35 You must try not to exaggerate that you are the only company selling diving in North Cyprus I know of at least 6 tour operators (who have been in the business for many years) who also sell diving. At IAH Ltd (Interest and Activity Holidays) we have been selling diving and diving holidays in the TRNC for 10 years. We wish you luck with your endeavour. I have no problems with you or trying to sell the TRNC or diving but I do with the truth, facts & travellers safety. You are not PADI, BSAC or ATOL bonded so what security do your clients have? You are according to companies house rather new "Date of Incorporation: 29/07/2009" so what safety, indemnity cover etc. do your clients have? Cyprus diving, you started visiting and diving on the island at the age of 16 (this is according to your published information). You certainly have more diving experience than I do but I don't like exaggeration etc as this is peoples lives & health you are talking about. Tom

To be more precise for those of you who like to split hairs we are the only SOLE diving holiday company that is UK based and offers Scuba diving holidays and packages to North Cyprus. i.e this is all we do. We are not a tour operator we do not make money out of selling flights/accommodation but offer a link through to an operator who does as an added service for our customers. We do not need to be PADI or BSAC bonded ourselves as we are not partaking in the dives! Instead we seek out reputable dive companies who are themselves PADI / BSAC certified such as Scuba Cyprus and Amphora who we have known and worked with for many years and yes I did begin Scuba diving at the age of 16 but how exactly this is relevant to the point you are trying to make I am not sure. Tom you claim to know Asim from Amphora (although you mispelt his name.) For your own peace of mind feel free to contact him for a reference for our company and he will be able to confirm all that I have said.

Corbo, Just checked in and saw John's message 28 re your health - that is best advice. Do go to an "experienced in diving" doctor as the risks are huge if your health is wrong - if you want I can email you a PADI health form for you to do your initial checks on. This is what I would advise if you were to call me as a client. Also please make sure that your travel / health insurance covers you (it might not be the diving that you are claiming for but they love an excuse to say "no cover").

Jesusjohn: Corbo is a beginner - never 'had his head wet' yet! Stoney Cove is a semi-dry to dry-suit dive. I guess you're a diver with experience, but frankly, I can't condone your advice in message 40 - but, of course, Corbo must make his own choices relating to any advice.
