Just arrived back from 10 days cat sitting for a friend in Polis. Bought our food locally in decent sized supermarkets. Was surprised to find that we spent about 50% more on housekeeping than anticipated. Many items costing around 5-10 E here were at least 2E more expensive down there, and we had some shockers like a pack of 8 locally baked doughnuts for £3.75E. We did not buy it, but a very small Green & Blacks luxury chocolate box was 17.5E ! There were exceptions, and we bought several kilos of good coffee on offer in Orphandes - Paphos....in large packet sizes not available in the North, however my overall impression is that despite rising costs here the north, it is still a cheaper place to live based on an overall shopping basket sample. Anyone find the same or otherwise? TonyE

Hi Tony We were down there for a couple of weeks and found the same .The few things that come to mind are 2 x latte coffee 9 euros ,bag of potatoes 4.99 euros, 6 Mr Kipling pies 4.50 all in Limmassol and in the new Mall by the new port the cost of clothes unbelievable. Can now understand why so many ex-pats are trying to sell up and move on.

OF COURSE the 'south' is expensive.. it uses the Euro which has appreciated 30-40% against the GBP... Why do you think Eire is 'empty' while everyone shops in the north ?...

Sorry mmmmmmm, I don't understand the need for your (capitalised) "OF COURSE"....... we use Turkish Lira here in the North where I normally shop and have used this currency to make my comparison. In the last 11 months the TL has shifted down by 5.1% against the Euro which does not explain why I could afford to shop there last Xmas, and I can't now. So my logic says that the South has just racked it's prices up regardless of exchange rates. TonyE
