Who's having what for their Xmas dinner. Do you see Turkey as a tired option and are going for something a bit more adventurous?

A nice piece of pork, WITH crackling, from the Pork Shop in Alsancak! And probably a pavlova (with my home grown passionfruit) for dessert, as it's Aussie tradition

Sorry flowerfairy I am one of the unfortunates who only manage NC for holidays so Christmas Day is in Scotland but I will get some to you the next time I am over. The strange thing is it is only Christmas and NY that I enjoy port. Hope you have a good one when it comes.

| After 20 years of eating assorted turkeys, mainly at mothers-in-law I managed to break the mould by getting divorced..and the first Xmas dish was a Rib of roast beef. Turkey, never again ! Last year with the shops open in Girne we were a bit bored (no telly) so we went shopping on Christmas day, I got an Electric oil filled radiator for Xmas, and Di got a new washing machine. On the way home from Arcelic they phoned to say the van was behind us and they would install that afternoon. After playing with our new "toys" it was too late to roast, and all that was unfrozen was some liver. So a large dish of Liver wrapped in bacon, onions and mash..a wonderful change from the norm. | Tony is rib of beef quite easy to get here as I fancy that myself this year. Had silverside last year (albeit on Boxing Day) and it was great. |

Christmas is about the only time I have turkey but it was an American thing before we got it. I think roast beef or goose was more traditional in Britain (if you were lucky enough) All my immediate family are going to my no. 2 son this year and he has bought turkey and goose breast, (I will cook it!) and there will be 9 of us at latest counting. I am glad as he has a dish-washer (which I don't, except in my Cyprus apartment!)

This rib of beef sounds really nice (not for me I dont eat meat) but for the others. But, how do you cook it? Do you have to marinate it. I have never seen this in the supermarkets in the UK. Where can I get it from? Does it contain lots of bones? Sorry if my questions sound a little "thick" but I am a vegetarian and rarely cook meat. So, lots of help required.

Tara Rib of Beef is similar to a rack of lamb (but much larger of course). At any good butchers in the UK you can get it on the bone, or, off the bone as a joint. I always used to buy Sirloin Joints for Sunday lunch, until one time the butcher had sold out and he advised that the butchers own favourite is rib of beef. It's full of flavour and can be cooked in the same manner as any roast joint.

many years ago my german sister in law was over for Christmas and ı was determined to have a goose. My best friend was married to a farmers son and so I got the goose - alive on Christmas eve. The goose was slughtered (husband very upset and couldnt eat it) I spent christmas eve plucking it (big greasy mess in the bath) cooked it the next day - a huge bird but very little meat, and to top it off, best friend showed me the photo afterwards of her 3 year old daughter with her arm round the bloody thing!! Never again!!! dead, frozen, plucked turkey for me every christmas since (till I came here of course)!!!!!!!!!!!!
