"Perhaps, like me, you are planting trees and are wondering what to grow. I’ve got the usual oranges, lemons and pomegranates and have an almond and mulberry tree but I wanted something different..."

The quince is indeed a beautiful tree. The fruit however is a very specialised taste lets say. It is a "bitter" fruit that needs very long, slow cooking to be palatable. I would suggest if growing for the fruit, buy a few (in season now) and see what you think. I still always recommend the loquat, evergreen, beautiful felty vanilla scented flowers (out now) and lovely sweet plum type fruit next year.

Adagirl - sounds like you've never made quince 'cheese' (membrillo). Doesn't take long to make, lasts ages and is an excellent adjunct to cheese, ham and other cold meats. Give it a go while the quinces are in season.

MUSIN M - I've got two 'Medler' trees in my garden in Girne - they are the first fruit of the year - delish - can make great jam and preserves, too!

Suggest plant 'Oriental Pear' - Nashi, as grown commercially in New Zealand. Bought some at the Girne Wednesday Market and will plant pips!

Another beautiful tree, (long term), would be 'Persimmon' - Google it and see!

We have a quince tree that is now 3 years old. Last year we watched and waited for about 6 months for our 3 quinces to mature only to find that the dog got there first. He didn't eat them just pulled them off and left them on the ground. This year we had 6 fruit and they have all dropped off! Perhaps we will actually get to eat some next year.

Musin_m, I've been advised to plant Loquat (Yeni Dünya) and Muşmular (Medlar) along with Quince (Ayva). I've also been told to plant Myrtle. I'm intending to grow a lot of unusual trees on a piece of rough land and would like to know of others that can be bought here.

Has anybody tried growing a lime tree here as you never see them around ?

In Australia they seem to grow well pretty much wherever you grow lemon trees

Planted a lime tree a couple of years ago and now bearing good fruit.

Also planted Papaya when we first arrived and get a brilliant crop during November\Dec (NOW)

It would seem the Cypriots dont know what Papayas are, but generally love the taste when presented with a fruit. These are a similar to the variety you can but in Waitrose for £2.50p each but the cypriot versionS are generally 3 or 4 times larger.

MUSIN M :

Like I said I've got 2 Medlers - like you say, you must have two. However, there seems to be two types - one produces larger fruit than the other.

For Kiwi Fruit and Avocado, you need a male & female, too - otherwise they won't fruit and I don't think they're hermaphroditic.

Another tree which is definitley worth considering (for TRNC) is the Pecan nut tree. I planted one in Paphos - it needs plenty of water (fitted one hose extension to it off a timer) - it still hadn't produced nuts after 3 years, but I guess our buyers will have reaped the benefit of my efforts by now - five years later.

Forget cherries! - 7 years to produce and usually the tree(s) need covering to protect from birds.

If your're in UK, MUSIN M, why not try Boysenberries? A few stakes and wire (same as for rasberries and loganberries) and they're like a large blackberry - very sweet and heavy cropping! Google it - also, you should be able to find the young canes in UK garden centres!

Cont'd: I don't know if they're grown in Cyprus, but the climate should suit, as it would for Tamarillos (Tree Tomato), or Feijoa Bushes. The above are some of the varieties I grew on my fruit orchard in NZ. Principally, though, I was producing apples and pears for export to Europe. I also grew 3000 tomatoes in a glasshouse (greenhouse in UK speak!). There was minimal return for commercial growers of tomatoes (varieties: Potentate & Moneymaker) in NZ in those days - I don't know why I bothered chasing the bloody market, and all over Xmas to New Year we were picking and packing and box-making!

We have grown guava trees from seed, have some spare if you are interested. We have also grown pawpaw (papaya) from seed, they are still in pots and one is flowering, we are not going to put them out until they are bigger as we lost several putting them out too soon. We have also grown passion fruit vines which have so much fruit on them. Almond is another one we have in the garden along with custard apple (which is yet to fruit) and sharon fruit, as well as olive of course. We live in Lapta and you are welcome to a guava if you want one.
