called in at Passport on the road from Nicosia to Girne, you know, the new one on the slip road. We ordered our snack and they brought out the bread, no butter or oil so we asked for some butter. It came, three small triangles cut from a block, no problem. The bill came and they tried to charge 4 1/2 lire for the butter. We refuesed to pay it. No problem. Snack was fine, service very good, but price of butter extortionate. As I say we refused to pay and there was no objection to that. Sometimes we are just too soft,, unlike the butter which was both expensive and hard!! (sorry about that)

We all have to pay for our sins, and butter is a sin cos it is loaded with cholesterol! And, of course, it is a 'filthy' British habit. Plus of course, it often resembles axle grease as opposed to a creamy delicacy. But if you ate it you should have paid for it. Probably a member of staff will have that docked from his/her wages. Now don't you feel guilty?

Marian, I totally agree with you for not paying, if you don't like it, you don't pay it! In fact I think there's actually a law on this common restaurant problem (at least there is in the UK) which says, "providing you have informed the restaurant manager the reasons of your dissatisfaction then you are entitled not to pay for that item / service". It's a shame more people don't exercise this, how else will they know that they're doing something wrong?
