Why are the recommendations for doctors so secret out here? If I was to recommend a garage/estate agent/hair dresser/ Pizza Shop/Vet or anything else and you did not get good service then you would reply at the very least.

Why is it that dentists and doctors seem to be part of a secret society and can not be named for some strange reason. Over the years I have seen lots of requests for a "Good" doctors name but have only very rarely seen any of them named.

Is it because once you get here all aches and pains leave you forever and you don't need them or because you go back to UK and depend on the NHS? I live here and will till they drop me in the hole (box being optional) so names of doctors are handy things to have.

Sadly, I can not help you out because I have not been to one yet, mainly because nobody will recommend one!

There was thread about Doctors a while ago, and they were named good or bad. Try the search facility - it should come up. I don't think there are many good GP type Doctors here in my opinion, they do seem to be specialists in certain fields so unless you know whats wrong in the first place.....................

I have always used the Life hospital in Nicosia because there is always a doctor on site, not like some where you have to wait for a doctor to come from his own surgery. The director of the Life hospital is doctor Kenan and to date is the best I have found so far, not that I visit too regular. I have also found that it is not always a good idea to tell a doctor what you think the problem is, as then they also assume and seem too not carry out the tests you really need. Just tell them your symptoms and not your diagnosis. Sometimes you walk out of a surgery here and wonder where the hell they came up with that diagnosis. My problem being I was in the medical proffession in the uk for many years so probably know a little too much for my own good.

Good luck and hope you get things sorted.

Ive used the clinic on the road on the right, past HSBC - they are most helpful - if the receptionist thats on isnt the one that knows much english the senior nurse has good english and will come out to help. I had to go twice a week, then once a week for nearly 9 months and they even found an Army doctor who could deal better with my case and he came in specially every time I went. For ordinary stuff we go to Dr Munur

Thank you for your concern,Ada girl.

After examination,had a drip for 3 hours,with a concoction of drugs.

BP 160 on arrival,80 after drugs.

Now got so many pills, anti bios, vitamins, etc, will need to go to bed an hour earlier, and get up accordingly,to take them all.

I feel better already. This doctor is highly recommended.Thank you Chris.

Mike

Glad you are feeling better if you want BP check during the week just e-mail me with your phone number and I will get back to you.

Waddo,

The reason that I don't post Dr's names on here is simple, as every time I do someone comes up with a negative story no matter who the Dr is and all this does is stress out whoever needs a Dr. And I recommend many Dr's depending on the symptoms.

I take your point NA, but I really do need to find out what to do if either of us were ill out here. At the moment, I haven't a clue and am just relying on our trips back to England. Glad to see that they sorted Mike out quickly and that he is on the mend now.

I do see the point in not wanting to see a negative story but having been in the position of not knowing about the medical services here - trust me, the biggest stress you can have is not knowing if there is a Doctor and where one can be found. Never mind if he/she has the worst record in history, when you have nothing then anything will be better than that.

You can always go once to have a splinter taken out of your finger and if the leg has been cut off as the cure then do not go back again - hop it!!!

Getting older (more mellow) so know that I will need to find a doctor soon and understand that nearly all here are specialists in their chosen field so it will not be easy - but a start point helps more than anything.

Waddo in an emergency your starting point is the nearest general hospital.

For advise or the name of a Dr it depends on what is wrong so here is your starting point. You can phone TRNC Healthcare and one of us will give you the name of a Dr who can deal with your complaint. We won't send you to a gynaecologist if you need a urologist for example.

Phone number for your records is 0533 884 5728.

Hope this helps.

Chris

p.s. if you just want a Blood Pressure check at some point we can arrange to do that for you as well.

Hi Chris, yes the Doctor's good English helped.

Always had high BP,and would like it checked after a few days of pills.

I know BP when I arrived was 176,not sure what over.

After a few hours lying down having the drip, down to 80.

Is this good,and acceptable?

mike

I must admit that my major concern is more about what to do in circumstances like (God forbid!) a stroke or a heart attack, where time is of the essence. In most circumstances where one needs a doctor, there is time to seek advice, but in an emergency, I think I should be more prepared with telephone numbers etc. We are not to far from Girne Hospital, but do they have English speakers on the switchboard? Do they send ambulances?

I know I should know ... but I don't.

Sloan

Here as some telephone numbers for you.

Girne Hospital 0392 815 2166 or 0392 815 2254

Ambulance emergencies 112

Police emergencies 155

Fire emergencies 199

We are going to be doing some training in the New Year to teach people what to do in an emergency such as Heart Attack. As soon as we get the venues organised we will advertise on here and anyone who is interested can come along. Does that appeal to you and do you think it would help?

I think it would be a brilliant idea. I did some basic first aid when I was teaching, but definitely need to brush up, as much of it applied to children, asthma attacks etc. Also, if you are doing blood pressure checks, I would really appreciate that too.

In North Yorkshire, we have First Responders in some of the villages and they are taught how to use defibrillators.

NA,

Thanks for all the information, you have got to be one of the most helpful people on this site and have my full support - well almost, I was rather hoping for a gynecologist but will settle for a BP check one day - LOL!

Afraid my military first aid would not be very useful but if I can help then just email me and if I can I will. When my wife was taken to Girne Hospital two years ago it was in the front of a white truck from Botanica with his lights flashing and his horn blowing, could not fault the service she received but did find that the only one who spoke very good english was the large chap at the door to emergency who took me by the scruff and led me away saying things like - you can not go in there!! Avery good idea as well as I was in a panic and would have just got in the way!

Never had to phone the ambulance yet but I have complete faith in there getting to us and getting us there as well.

Thanks again, great people support.

There is an okay GP here. He is not a specialist but he will recommend one or blood tests should he think you need them. I have used him on many occasions.

Name is Dr Hakan Ataker. He is down the next side street after the HSBC corner. His road is immediately opposite the road where the Girne Private hospital is. His practice is on the right hand side about half way down the road. There is also a Letam (off shoot of the Lefkosa main Letam) where they do xrays & more in the smae building. Hakan speaks good English & unlike the specialists, because he is a GP, he is in his consulting rooms in the morning & the afternoon after 3pm until quite late. Also open Saturday. I can't provide a telephone number but you just turn up & wait or not if there is no other patient waiting.

Re. Dr Munur - sorry. no comment.

I agree with Scruff - Dr Hakan Ataker is great. Very helpful, decent English and not a rip off artist. Hi phone number is 0392-8155204 or mobile 0542-8537427. He is a GP but will happily recommend suitable specialists if the need arises. I've used him for 10 years now and would recommend him to anybody.
