I had lessons and passed my test here a few years ago. The costs were less than half (but the lesson only 40 mins). This has probably changed a bit since I took mine. The test itself took a theory - naming no more than 3 road signs out of a well thumbed book. The actual driving test took 15 minutes and was very easy. A straightforward drive, round a couple of corners, one manouvere, mine was a 3 (5) point turn, and back to base!! I passed by the way.............

easier.....in fact too easy! I know, I've done it. I had never driven in my life up until August 2008. Decided that I need to drive so was recommended a driving instructor who spoke perfect English. I opted for a package deal which included the provisional licence (known as a student licence here), 10 lessons (which you are required to take by law regardless of your driving abilitiies) and the test. This also included a years driving licence. Cost 1000 TL but I believe it went up to 1500 TL while I was taking my lessons. Lessons went well and have to say I enjoyed them...apart from the other lunatic local drivers on the road. You are only taught to reverse round corners and 3 point turns.....no parking or emergency stops. At the end of the lessons I had to insist on a further 3 lessons to practice my maneuvers as i was not too confident. Driving instructor insisted I was "perfect" and further lessons would involve me paying me more money.

Breezyboy, You missed a few questions eg :- Q4. when should you use your fog-lights and main beam ? A. All the time. Q5. Should you use your mobile phone/ apply make up/ do your hair while driving ? A. Yes to all the above. I'm sure this is a can of worms that has just been opened.

Msg 4 cont... After a further 3 lessons I was ready for the test.....instructors words not mine. I was told that a request had been made asking for an English speaking examiner.....wrong!! "Left" & "Right" were the only two words he knew, everything was instructed to me by hand signals. Test itself took 10 minutes which included the two maneuvers. Included in the exam was me teaching (and writing in his diary) the examiner how to say "reverse round the corner" and "3 point turn".....I kid you not! On returning to the test centre he told my driving instructor I was the best driver in cyprus....he either had a warp sense of humour or the other students were a lot worse than me. Pleased to say I passed and have now been driving nearly 15 months with no mishaps....yet. People often comment that I must be mad to drive here but I don't really know any different being a first time driver. If you would like details of the Instructor I used......more than happy to recommend him.

Watched one of the driving 'instructors' driving down the road in Girne today, cigarette in one hand and mobile phone (texting I think) in the other. A shining example of Cypriot road (non)sense.
