A friend of mine who lives in the South lives next door to a Greek mainland soldier. He has assured her that there are very few Greek soldiers on Cyprus. Does anyone know how many a few are?

The Cyprus National Guard has about 10,000 Greek Cypriot soldiers but many of its senior officers are from Greece, apart from 1,250 Greek troops stationed in the south.

According to information given by General G.A.C. Hughes , United Nations force (UNFICYP), on 21.01.2009 : Greek Cypriot national army: 12,500 Greek army (ELDYK) 1200-1500 Greek Cypriot Reserved army 60,000 (reserved: they keep guns and ammunitions at home) Turkish Cypriot national army 3,000 Turkish army 21,000 (not 40,000 as Greek Cypriot government insists)

60,000 armed Southern Cypriots. Why the hell are they allowed to keep weapons and amunition at home if they are reservists? I would be quite concerned if the Turkish army marched out of Cyprus leaving the door open to 60,000 fully armed and trained Southern Cypriots.

I can't see north cyprus lasting out the day if turkey really left on the other hand turkey has stated again and again they would never abandon cyprus "just to get into the eu" and contrary to some opinion south of the 'line, I believe them also the steady increase in turkish population in the north will make it prohibitively difficult for turkey to leave, more likely the north may be oblidged to become a turkish province as regards the military balance, nato turkey has a huge and combat-experienced armed forces nuff said

I didn't think there were any laws in the south that allowed you to keep a gun!

I do believe the Swiss Army reservists keep their weapons and ammo at home. I also understand that they have a high suicide rate using these weapons and that the government/Army is thinking of taking the weapons into armories.

Dear Andre_514 re msg 7 >> I can't see north cyprus lasting out the day if turkey really left<< Interesting that TR is the only member of the current security council to think that a UN presence is no longer required !!! http://www0.un.org/News/Press/docs/2009/sc9815.doc.htm As for the number of GR / TR troops *I* reckon 1200 mainland Greeks and 35-40 mainland TR Troops - that's based on various NATO / UN estimates.

According to a GC on NCFP: "GC reservists are actually 88,000 odd, and the National Guard is 12,000 odd, and the reason they keep their weapons and gear at home is to save precious time if they ever need to mobilize. Every able-bodied male between the ages of 20 and 60, is a former soldier turned reservist, who can transform into a soldier in about 10 minutes and report to his company ready for action. The RoC has learned its lesson from the mistakes of 1974 when stockpiles of weapons were looted and lost during the 74 coup, thereby rendering the country defenseless during Turkey’s invasion and advance." http://www.northcyprusfreepress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=2020

msg16 if turkey had invaded , in the meaning of the word , invade , then surely we would,nt have a divided island , ie ,no body would speak greek ,no signs would be in greek , their would be for example ,no greeks ,turkey never invaded , it intervened to stop greek massacare of turks ,there was no mistakes made by greeks in 74 over weapons they had them all , but using them against women and kids was easier than using them against the turkish army , especially when the so called motherland also turned its back on them , turkey made a big mistake , they should have invaded , and today we would have no cyprus problem .

6m, [*I* reckon 1200 mainland Greeks and 35-40 mainland TR Troops - that's based on various NATO / UN estimates.] you don't have to reckon, ..... its UNFICYP says 21,000 mainland TR Troops not as 35-40 as you wish to believe.

The RoC has no air force to speak of. And what use are their few Israeli built tanks, running around on the the Mesaoria Plain? Even if every last Turkish soldier left tomorrow, the GC's wouldn't dare to attack with their ground force. They would run, like rabbits, as soon as they glimpsed the first Turkish jet in their airspace!

6M The UN presence never secured a genuine peace before the Turkish intervention/ invasion and in the absence of Turkish troops or at least their backing would likely provide little protection now. Their presence is largely a waste of money and diverting of troops to countries where they are actually needed and could serve a useful purpose. Aussie
