I have just had a call from someone regarding a gentleman who is seriously ill and his wife needs some support, They live near Ercan airport, they are Australian Cypriots and are pretty desperate. As you can appreciate the nurses from TRNC Healthcare all live Lapta, Karsiyaka area so it is a long way to go. So if anyone can help please give me a call on 0533 884 5621. Thanks in advance Chris

Why don't you contact the 'Medicare' people. They operate (not literally) all ove the island and have UK trained Nurses and carers. Tel: 0533 841 6505

Chris, the low level of response may indicate how few expats live in the areas (OK obvious). There are a number of student accomodations in the area and it is possible that they might have someone there who may help for "work experience" or a small sum in their hand. I guess you have thought of the hospital staff who also might be glad of some extra cash.

message 10, Medicare are too expensive for the family, we have 5 trained nurses as well as carers to, problem is that it is too far. But I have spoken to the lady and I am going to see her next week as a one of to possibly give her some advise and support. message 11 The lady can't afford to pay anyone as she has been the sole carer for her husband for almost 3 years now and cannot go out to work. But I will pursue the student thing as I had thought of this also but don't hold out much hope as the nurses here don't care, in so much as they don't wash patients etc.

Tell me something is the TRNC health care completely free to all users? Maybe that is why you aren't getting a response from people around Ercan maybe they might be more willing if they got recompence. You know what its like these days very few people do 'out for nowt'

Hippo, Yes it is free but we do need to cover our costs e.g. petrol. So we do ask for a donation towards this. The problem with Ercan is that it is going to take an hour there and an hour back from Karsiyaka / Lapta and that is before we even start. I am going to see the lady next week and if nothing else I can give her a bit of moral support and if you read message 12 hopefully I can find a solution for her. Chris p.s. Maybe I should stop eating and pay someone to do this.

Hippo, you'd be surprised at how many people are willing to help, "for nowt". It's attitudes like yours that get expats a bad name, "little Englanders" comes to mind. D

Nurse awful - Nurses here - 'don't care and don't wash their patients' ? Really? I can see you're playing the 'long game' Many UK ex-pats have had excellent care here. I think your criticism of the workers here is not only wrong but not very wise.

Cornish as an ex nurse and also a patient here i can agree 100% with what chris says. The nurses here are not trained to cover the care side of things only the medical that is why a family member is expected to stay with the patient in all the hospitals here. The medical care i received here has been brilliant but the care side leaves a lot to be desired.

msg 19: totally agree with you. About 4 years ago I fell and dislocated my shoulder. Girne hospital x rayed it and said I'd have to go to Lefkosia general. I was seen to immediately but there were problems so I was taken to theatre. When I awoke I was in a 6 bed ward, my wife beside me. The other 5 patients looked like dead bodies. My wife said I had to wait one hour after awakening, then I could go. A family of about six turned to to attend to the young man in the next bed. They seemed to be feeding him and sorting out his bedding. When the hour was up, nobody but this family had been on the ward, we got ready to leave. I still had a needle thingy in the back of my hand. We searched the hospital, it was about 1-00am and pretty deserted. Eventuall we found three nurses in a small room, on a break I think. One of them removed the needle and we were left to find our own way out. At reception they ordered us a taxi and we came home. The medicare was 1st class, the aftercare nonexistent

cont. I am not complaining, I accept that this is the norm here. Given the 3 to 4 hour wait I'd have had in UK before treatment, I'll settle for Cyprus style. Tony

msg 17: It isn't up to Nurseawful to contact Medicare, that is up to the sick man's wife. In this case I doubt that death is likely to be imminent, speaking as a layman. Tony

Cornish re message 18. The next time I have a patient in Lefkosa Hospital you are welcome to come with me and see for yourself the 'care' the patients get! 3 years ago a friends father was in the infectious diseases ward and when I asked for something to clean his mouth with I was handed a fork with gauze over the PRONGS. So don't try and tell me that is good nursing care! And finally if you read message 12 the lady cannot afford to pay anyone. Chris
