Is this the Euro effect, or something else?

http://www.unficyp.org/nqcontent.cfm?a_name=crossing_details_1

Folks travelling South to north are UP approx 7k and North to South DOWN approx 2K

If one compares Sept 08 to Sept 09 the figures show N-S down 10% and S-N UP 10%

So.. Are GCs shopping more in the north ?

Are more folk using Larnaca ?

What do you think are the reasons..

TRY to keep it 'sensible' ;)

Stayed in the south, met many resident English whom knew were to go for the best prices in the North.

It's not surprising that the people travelling south is down and I would think a lot of it is to do with the Euro, plus there is more to choose from on the north side than there ever was and where ever possible many of us would choose to support the north and only go south for things we cannot get here.

There have been many threads saying how expensive it now is over there and many products, in particular groceries, are now cheaper here than in the south whereas before the Euro it was the other way around.

Just look at the insurance to travel there, it used to be £10 now it is the equivalent of £25.

I recently bought a pair of jog trousers in M&S in UK at £9.50 and exactly the same in Nicosia was 16 Euros, which as we all know is about £16.

I would think that a lot of the traffic that goes North are people using Larnaka and Pafos airports, But if that is the case i would of expected to even itself out on return journeys. I flew in from Gatwick the other Sunday and a lot of people on that plane were going North.

Re No. 1: Don't you mean: "Are LESS people using Larnaca?" i.e. are MORE using Ercan?

A lot of expats living in the south come over here to eat out cheaper, and on average it IS a LOT cheaper.

If the TRNC gov could only see it, there is a big captive audience down south who have a lot of spending potential. A reduction of import duties into TRNC would reduce retail costs and attract more sales. This would not only be a boost to the TRNC economy, but a great help to residents here.

There may be a trend of people moving North anticipating a property "boom" post any solution. I suspect selling a house in the South can't be that easy right now, though.

mesg 10,i agree,i'm not sure if prices went up a few months before the Annan vote in 2004,but i bet theres a quite a few ready to speculate as if there is an agreement i'm sure the property values will surge very quickly,NC is probably likely to outperform all other countries within a 12-18month period imo if an agreement is reached.

Spent about a month down South on and off just recently. It seems that the ex-pat fraternity down there are just finding it way to expensive to live.Selling up isnt easy either if they could sell they couldnt or wouldnt want to go back to the UK hence the sudden upturn and intrest in the North. They are also finding it cheaper to come North for there shopping.

Gone now is the mentallity that if they found out you were a homeowner in the North you were virtually a leper now its all questions on how things are up there.

That was one of the items of conversation that kept coming up especially in the Pathos area.A big concern for a lot of them, that coupled with the saturation of the market.I did see on another forum in the South that GR/GC,s being advised to wait a while longer then they would make a better killing on buying property from the foreigners.

All of the veiwers from south said that the cost of living was their main factor in wanting to live here.

I can understand that the price of food shopping has got more expensive recently. We have not crossed to do shopping for ages since we compared the prices of some of the items we were buying, but the cost of living I dont think is any higher than the North. I have friends in the south and we have compared things like electric, gas, broadband internet, mobile telephones, house phones and road tax and they are all cheaper than the north, so why do they think it is cheaper here surely they are mistaken or am I wrong

I dont think there is much in it anymore, however I have noticed with the surge of new supermarkets opening in the north that the price of groceries is only going to get cheaper which is good news for us but as for the rest I am not sure.

We met some very nice GC ladies in a restaurant 2 weeks ago. They come here every weekend & one was celebrating her birthday. There were 4 of them & 2 of us & they shared the birthday cake with us & left the remainder for the proprietor & his family, who they know very well.

One spoke excellent English & she said things were so expensive for them too in the South, despite the fact that they are working & paid in Euros.

PS. The restaurant was quiet because it's very much off the beaten track.

PPS. They don't want a settlement either. What they want is continued peace in Cyprus.

Probably a number of reasons why North -> Cyprus traffic reducing. My guesses:

- The number of TCs crossing over to work in the South is falling due to economic situation (less work).

- Bad Euro exchange rate making shopping in South expensive for Northerners.

- Novelty has worn off for some, they've been there and done that.

- Some TCs that experienced bad treatment/attitude in the South have stopped going.

- Cheap flights with Pegasus / CTA.

High cost of car insurance to drive in the South doesn't help.

the main factor that has had the north not going south is work , the tc,s have been replaced by

eastern europeans working for less money ,mainly due to the economic climate.
