I now take cash and change it as and when needed (whilst keeping an eye on exchange rate). Debit cards can prove expensive. HSBC bank in Girne will give sterling from the cash machine, rest I believe only YTL at whatever bank decides to charge. Beware using certain credit cards as you can be charged twice for using them. Post Office & Nationwide credit cards don't charge for purchases abroad. See moneysupermarket.com to compare. Martin

There is a money change place near The Rocks casino in Girne who gives excellent exchange rates, plus everybody accepts GBP, but the banks do fluctuate inexchange rates. Chris

Watch out using cash machines. They give you the money then your card back. You may have walked off counting your notes before the card comes out. Lem

Good luck on your visit. We only take emergency ytl to tide us over for the journey, a few euro for when we do fly into larnaca and the rest in sterling. We always take back up visa and switch and let both companies know that we will be using them in N.C. In case they think they're being fraudulantly used. Don't forget about the cash first then card returns after thing. I did it in April in town. Left my card plugged in (despite being told on here to be careful) with the pin in place and wandered off to open a bank account at Iktisatbank. Incidentally when I realised at 6.00 pm - 7 hours later, I rang the bank from England and the card had not been used. Hope you have a lovely time. Smudge
