Had a power cut for a few hours this morning and now the power has come on again but some of my appliances are not working properly and there seems to be only a small amout of power to them, even though others are working ok. Is this a fault with the company would anyone know..!!!!!

We had the same problem once.Neighbours had full power. It sorted itself out about one hour after power had been restored to the whole area.

Normally one phase is given to a house, just a phase (each phase is called Red, Yellow and Blue by the British and R, S, T by the Germans. The Chineese use other colours or they call them simply A, B and C). The voltage between a neutral wire and one of the phases is nominally 240 volts in Cyprus. Larger houses and mansions are connected to three phases so as not to overload a single phase. Also the larger electrical motors require three phase connections. However it is mandotory that in houses the sockets in any one room are all connected to the same phase. This is for safety reasons because the voltage between phases is 415 volts and thus more dangerous if mixed up. To cut it short, there may be a fault on one of the phases and thus all the sockets in a particular room may have no power or very low power. Voltage much lower than normal can be costly as well because motors like the compressors on the fridges can burn out due to low voltage. Hence in such situations you should turn off all your fridges and the like. ismet

Fridge/freezer is knackered the low power has killed the compressor and the mossie killer has also died. Power on full now but too late and no chance of any insurance I doubt but will check policy. Its a worrying thing if this happens in the night again the low power. Is there anything that can be done to prevent it happening again???

Cooper (msg. 7), A surge protector or surge arrester as they are called is an attempt to protect the connected gadgets against surges i.e. you get a surge when there is a thunderstorm or when the power is back on momentarily when the voltages can go up to 5000 volts and even higher. The surge protector shorts the system, blows he fuse and protects your gadgets. However, if you have a normally high voltage, say 260 volts the surge protector will do nothing. The same goes for low voltages. If you wish to protect your gadgets against low or high voltage, you must use one of the devices as shown here http://www.elkocyprus.com/e-voltaj.html They are supposed to be rated at 13 amperes but unfortunately they can hardly handle more than 8 amperes safely. Anything higher thgan that and the plug starts to overheat and possibly melt down. I think the British should redesign their 13A plugs but that is another matter. If you wish to protect gadgets drawing more than 8 amperes or the whole

house, you can use one of my voltage protectors as given above to control a relay or a contactor and thus handle much bigger currents. ismet
