Went to the party today at the dome. I couldnt believe how rude and ignorant some people are; The Mayor was at the entrance to the main hall to greet visitors, so many just walked past without any acknowledgement to him at all. During his speech people just carried on talking despite being asked 3 times to be quiet. Whilst the children were singing the noise of people talking was a constant drone despite people again being asked to be quiet. As guests, people should have shown more respect to our host. As this is the first and possibly the last time I will attend this particular event, I wondered if the behaviour shown today was the norm. I appreciate the effort made by the Belediye to wine and entertain us, but consider the actions of some people present to be totally out of order and so disrespectful. Did anyone else feel the same or am I over reacting ?

I attended, and was also disgusted at the ignorance of some people. But some of the worse offenders were not the Brits, but some other ex-pats (not sure if they were Russians or Bulgarians), but they were especially noisy and had no control over the children who were with them. Also, the dress code of some left a lot to be desired..........the lime green shorts did belong to a Brit I'm afraid. But the skimpy hot pants, and thigh length boots belonged to a Russian !!!!

Unfortunately, pretty much as I would have expected. Metin, can only hope the skimpy hot pants and thigh length boots were being worn by a female. Mind you, nothing would surprise me! Merry Christmas. Jean

It was the first time that I attended and thought the entertainment was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed. I even won a raffle prize for a free cut and blow dry so I am very chuffed and grateful. I am sure there are many others also who feel the same.

Yes, Queen180 there were a lot of people who really enjoyed themselves, said how great it was. Terrific to see folk they knew, sharing time with warmhearted people and full of praise for the Mayor'#s generosity (even if it is the tax payers money). The entertainment was put on for those who wished to enjoy it, and was much better than previous years. There was no one shoving food in a paper bag! And the hubbub of which some complained was the sound of people enjoying themselves! So, yes, you are right - there were many others who really enjoyed themselves. But I wish someone would tellme the name of the plant we all received. I had a nice chat with the Mayor, who is not a pushy bloke and he waits for people to go to him - hence the comments earlier. I would say the event gets better each year, and this year there were so many different nationalities that it could hardly be referred to as a BRS funciton. Very internaitonal. Great stuff.

So glad it went well MarieB, maybe they all read 44 and got scared off by the "designated camera person" threat? Hence the absence of carrier bags. From what I have read it was not the Brits who let the side down this year. Well done. It appears a good time was had after all. Tx

It was an excellent afternoon as far as we were concerned. The effort put in by the children singing was outstanding and they diserved the massive applause they received. As for lady in the "hot pants" I saw nothing wrong in them, she was very fashionably dressed and certainly not as offensive as the small number of British people. Stop blaming other nationalities it was the British once again. It was embarresing that after the compere called for quiet, then a lady from the audience grabbed the microphone to ask for quiet, then the Mayor himself made comment. If peope cannot be quiet for 5 minutes while the host of the party makes a speech then they should not go to these events. I did see Mayor on way out to thank him personally for an otherwise enjoyable afternoon and as I did so two people staggered out totally oblivious to everything. TO ANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE DECENCY TO RECOGNISE THEMSELVES FROM ABOVE - PLEASE KEEP AWAY IN FUTURE. ps - the plants are petunias

RE msg 14, cyprusishome: (...) Stop blaming other nationalities it was the British once again. (...) => Impossible. In the well known and usual spirit of this board: it must have been the 20 or so Dutch(wo)men living in Northern Cyprus.

I was in attendance yesterday at the Mayors party and like others felt totally ashamed at the noise from guests during the mayors speech and the children's choir, this is the fifth time of going and the quality of guests has gone down dramatically, the tattooed f*** wit with the lime green shorts and grey fleece should be drawn and quartered as should the alcoholics that turned up pissed before the start of proceedings. I don't think there is one local council in the UK that puts on a party for their foreign guests, and we should treat the Girne Mayors offer with the up most respect. Lili with respect the carrier bags were not in attendance, I think they have returned to the UK for the festive season, the lady who quite rightly told the ignorant members of the hall to shut up on two occasions should be applauded as when she thanked the Mayor on behalf of the guests for inviting us and putting on an excellent event.

I will personally consult with the Mayor on how the dress code and guest list can be arranged to make the event better next year.

There is a very simple way to get the rif raf not to go, and that is don't give away free food and drink, however it probably wouldn't be very well attended, or give out tickets to people that are respectful. It never fails to amaze me, the people that turn up when freebies are given away, and then never patronise the place again.

Aslan, bless you, sorry but your post made me laugh so much. Lime green shorts and grey fleece? Did he get dressed in a hurry? Is he colour blind? Do people actually wear such combinations normally, or was the outfit just for the cocktail party? What an idiot he is. Still giggling about it now, I just cant get the vision out of my mind. LOL I dont know but I always thought that cocktail parties were black tie events. Perhaps someone could make sure it is next year. Tx

Common sense should prevail where a dress code is concerned. Mind you, bearing in mind some of the sights you see, it would appear that some people just don't have any. Surely, you'd dress according to the occasion and out of respect for your hosts. I despair! J PS Parky, I take your point about the freebies. We were talking to some people a few years ago whilst on holiday in NC, who'd attended an opening night of a bar/restaurant the evening before. They were disgusted that so little was being GIVEN away and that they were expected to pay for their drinks. Needless to say, they made it plain that they would not be going there again; mind you, they probably wouldn't have gone back even if the bar had given away freebies all night!

Been looking in on Gary Weston's board whilst 44 has been down (I do go over there occasionally anyway) and was interested to see a post about the Victorian Christmas Market at the Pia Bella at the beginning of December (a charity do). People over there experienced a similar thing as Lilli mentioned regarding the 'carrier bag merchants.' In this case, it was loading up their plates with sausage rolls, mince pies, etc. and not eating them all, just leaving them half eaten on tables, so much so that the organisers had to send our for bought cakes from the pastry shop to cater for those who came along later. One lady was seen using tin foil to cover her plate of food ready for taking it home!

RE msg 25, Jeannie: There has been a reader's letter in one of the local news papers (Cyprus Today), Jeannie. Or even two, if I'm not mistaken. It made you want to write a letter with apologies to the Mayor - even when you were not there. I'm glad I know different British people, other well behaved expats and Cypriot Turks. What a bl**dy shame to have them as the UK (and possibly other countries) "export article".

Thanks for telling me that the plants were Petunias. I should have recognised a kindred soul, cos I often feel like a 'lonely little petunia in an onion patch'. And maybe even more so at the Mayor's do. Why is everyone getting so hypercritical of what happened and what people wore and, and, and....... It was the Mayor's function, which he has been doing for about ten years, and I am sure if he wanted a particular dress code he would have asked for it. Not really our place to judge eachother because some are a little more colourful than others. As to noise, I know of the many Turkish and Cypriot functions I have attended, as a friend of mine said 'We like to talk' - and they do, and part of the noise at the function was because people were catching up. The entertainment was provided, but in a way, little different to cabaret's in clubs - largely ignored. And as the function was run bythe Belediye, surely any input at public level should be from them, and it is not our place to

interefere even if one thinks one is putting things to rights. I would love to know the Mayor's thinking of us all, and to what extent he was embarrassed by anything, or not, but I guess he is too much of a gentleman to say. I just hope that he continues to hold this event, and that he does not get to hear of all the criticisms from we 'yabanci' for whom it is meant to be a happy and joyful occasion - not a judgemental one. I raise my glass (of water, cos I don't drink alcohol) and say 'Three cheers' to the Mayor. #(oh yes, by the way, I agree that Council;s in U.K don't hold functions for foreigners, but in many areas they wouldn't get anyone going, and in others it would be the entire population, so it could be kinda difficult) Happy New Year everyone!

Oh dea,r Viking Queen. By your staying away, it means that I can't meet you and wish you a happy new year, cos I think that those of us who feel we just might be reasonable ambassadors of our own country, and who love meeting others who have come to live here as one who is prepared to live 'if one should find oneself at Rome, then live as the Romans do' (St.Ambrose of Milan said that, so it shows it isn't just Cyprus), just love to meet others of a similar mind. what better than a function put on by Cyprus for us all to meet. Anyway, as I didn't meet you and many others, I guess I must say 'Happy New Year' here and hope we DO meet.

Not sure we are allowed to arrange 'dates' Viking Queen, but if you could e mail me and let me know your 'haunts'# (which of course will be all non-smoking by the time we meet!) and a good time. I get rather busy as many know, but always have time for coffee and a chat! Normally Thursdays and Fridays are my freeest days. Over to you - otherwise Imight have to persuade you to go to the Mayor's do next year to meet you, and I warn you, if I win the Lotto I willbe gone. So, let's do it early in the year. And if anyone has pickedup on this thinking that something exciting has been added to this 'thread' , sorry to disappoint you, but a truly HAPPY NEW YEAR be yours.
