Christmas Day, time for our lunch/dinner at Guido's Bistro. An abundance of fine food. And there they are, on the outside terrace, two stray dogs. It seems they are brother and sister, some kind of hunting dogs. Very friendly towards people. Tagged in their ears (by KAR?) and put back on the road...

Waiting patiently for some attention and food...

It takes some time before the food is coming, so the male checks the inside of the restaurant..

Of course Liz Spina found the time - although she was very busy serving in the restaurant! - to offer these two unfortunate dogs some food... The dogs enjoy their Christmas after the food and water...

When we left Guido's Bistro it was getting dark and the two dogs went asleep next to the restaurant - sure to get food again tomorrow.

I still have a question I keep asking myself over and over again. What kind of life is this for dogs? Put back in "nature", daily begging for food, their fur full of ticks and flees, carelessly crossing the road - waiting for this one car... There must be a better solution for stray dogs than keeping them (indefinitely?) in an overcrowded environment (KAR) or lying dead along the roads. The answer is euthanasia - and I'm not sorry to say it, because I try to remain emotional and realistic and not only emotional.

DC it is cruel to be kind. Yes it is very emotional to put down a healthy animal, but what is their quality of life back onto the streets? So little loving homes.

I thought VETs couldnt do this in NC? Can someone tell me if they do?

I know they do this in other places. I have been to some Med countries and this happens. It is horrible, but it is a solution. Whilst some people may think it unbearable, they are not there 24/7 or have the financial resources to feed/look after/cover vets bills for these poor strays. It must be particularly distressing in the wintertime when there are so few visitors.

something has to be done DC I agree I saw these two beautiful strays at Guido's yesterday and they looked so gentle so someone has been looking after them, but enough is enough KAR has to do something either find them homes or put them to sleep, it must be best in the long run otherwise road darting will be the death of them in a cruel way

I agree something has to be done but what. They have broken my heart today as the other shops think they are a nuisance. I have spoken to KAR ang given them the tag numbers inthe hope they can at least take them from the area they were dropped to but until Margaret Ray gets back there in nothing they can do. I just fear for thier safety x

RE msg 3, taraspring: (...) I thought VETs couldnt do this in NC? Can someone tell me if they do? (...)

=> I don't know any vet nor have I heard spoken in the open about any vet doing this job (euthanasia/animals). The reason I was given is that (a) they (all?) don't want to put down healthy animals and (b) that the Koran forbids it. I checked reason (b) with two Moslims (one TC and one Turkish) and both said that they had never heard the Koran forbidding it. That probably leaves us with reason (a). Although I highly respect the TC vets I know I do not understand how they can call stray dogs (sometimes starved, usually ridden with ticks and flees) healthy. And most important to me: the circumstances in which they live - survive for some time - are *not* healthy. And every time I see another dead dog along the road it makes want to do *something*. But what and how?! It's a desperate situation.

Hans it is desperate . I have been heart broken today by those two. I fear for thier safety as the other shop owners are upset naturall y so by thier presence. Im afraid to feed them so they may go but on the other hand i cant see them starve and face that busy road. I just hope KAR get back to me soon with a solution.

RE msg 8, Lilli: (...) I just hope KAR get back to me soon with a solution. (...)

=> Sorry to say it, Liz, but let's face the truth in my opinion: KAR *IS* an important part of the problem. What good does it do to neuter dogs, tag them and put them back in "nature", the town or wherever?

=> Why are dogs kept by KAR on its premises - often as long as the dogs live? Or? Homing a couple of dogs doesn't solve the problem - obviously. I keep reading about "KAR couldn't take them, because there is no space for more dogs".

=> Stray dogs must be caught and put down. Or: stray dogs must be caught and given 3, 4, 5 or 6 months at KAR before they are put down when nobody comes for them. The current policy of KAR (with all my respect for the good work KAR does) is wrong. I'm afraid KAR has to be convinced of this fact. One way or another (*).

(*) I think I have the right to write this. When I arrived in Northern Cyprus I became a lifetime member.

KAR cant help me, these dogs were put in tha alsancak area last august. They suggest I change thier feeding station away from the restaurant. Also to ask pizzaking to feed them away from the restaurant. The other shops just want them gone so I cant ask Pizzaking to do that.I just do not know what to do now

At the first opportunity I shall try to find enough like-minded people and challenge the policy of (the) KAR (committee).

What are BARK'S policies on strays? Are they the same as KAR.

Lilli, put an appeal on here for good homes on a separate thread.

Someone must be looking for the lab, and can re-home the two strays.

Come on people in TRNC - Anyone who is looking to rehome, please contact Lilli.

There seem to be even more stray animals around at the moment, surely something must be done soon. I had a stray pregnant cat turn up looking terrible, all skin and bones, so I fed her. When she had her kittens my Cypriot neighbours asked me not to feed her. They are used to my 4 cats, but didn't want any more. So I was creeping out at 7 oclock in the morning to feed her, and now her kittens. I have taken the mother to the vets to be spayed, but when I rang KAR about them collecting the kittens to be "done", they said not until they are 6 months old. When I said but by this time the girls will be pregnant, they said yes, probably, but that was their policy. I don't understand that, because in England they can be done at 3 to 4 months old, before a chance of getting pregnant. I don't want these cats, but as they won't go away, I will carry on feeding them, but it is a huge problem. The kittens are very timid, and won't let me near them.I hope one day there will be an answer.,
