I often take a boot load of firewood over to friends on the GC side, a retired couple with low funds. Being Xmas I decded to take them over a lorry load (1 ton of timber). Arranged it all, lorry was legal etc driven by a TC but the SBA wouldn't allow it thru, citing health risks. Said small ammounts in the boot is OK, but not a lorry load. Excuse me! if there is a risk (which I doubt) it is a risk how ever big the load.

Thanks for nowt SBA/GC side, you cost me YTL 70 as the driver still wanted paying of course.

I am sick and tired of such petty stuff on the S.Side. Roll on partition,

Surely wood is cheaper the south side and more of it compared to here at over 100tl a ton plus driver plus petrol. A kind gesture though to your friends.

No, firewood is much more expensive in the south - old story of greedy Greeks etc etc trying to make up for the loss of tourism revenues.

I think that the 'Customs' post at the SBA is manned by UK Service people - I and my vehicle have been checked - thoroughly - every time I have taken that route

I have always found them to be absolutely correct in their demeanour, but utterly precise and definite in their interpretation of the regulations

I really don't have an explanation as to why a small amount of 'x' is OK, and a large amount isn't, but I am willing to bet that they are following impartial guidelines - our boys are the best in the business!

Re Msg No. 6: Absolutely, although one should remember the SBA act on behalf of the GC Authorities.

At the time there were 2 staff on duty at the SBA Checkpoint, a Turkish Cypriot female officer (the SBA employ TCs as they speak turkish, and females needed if they have to search females) and a Greek Cypriot male officer. No english staff on as was a holiday I suppose.

Update:

I have since been back to the crossing point and have been advised to write a letter of complaint if I have any gripes. I am thinking about this, will do if I think there is any mileage in doing so,

Also, why not put a complaint into the EU, + your local Briish MP, if you have one.

A letter to the British High Commission/Nicosia needs to be sent, also.

Your experience once again demonstrates that there can never be a settlement of 'The Cyprus Problem'.

Presuming that you thoroughly explained the circumstances, it just goes to show the extent of 'the milk of human kindness' of these (border) people.

On a similar topic, are the TC border crossing chaps still checking every single vehicle that comes through as they were the last few days up to Christmas?
