We bought ours from Beko, on main road to town, on seaside of road. Last year 32" LCD less than £600, expensive by uk and sc standards, but beats the hassle of trying to get across the border without getting caught, and the guarantee works. Chris

we are having some friends price them up for us in the south. to bring when they visit. we had a look round in may and the prices make your eyes water. other than that we are considering paying the extra at the airport and taking our old one and buying a new one for home it is still cheeper than buying one there. and than just paying the licence fees. but you can't do that with an old one apparently the sound won't work

hi l loveyour dogs, i believe its been menthioned on the forum before that if you purchase a television set in n/c that you dont need to buy a t/v licence as your tv will have a hollogram on the back and this covers your tv licence and this is a one off payment. not like in the uk. all the best.

berty Buy in the south and save quite a bit, I don't think so.!! take your chances at TRNC customs I don't think so!!, get caught, offer to pay duty, that will be refused plus a fine, worse still confiscation with no redress. ilovemydogs (me too) Bring one from UK or buy in the TRNC a little expensive yes , but you do get to keep it. Risky business smuggling, do not involve a friend.

hi guys you are all missing one vital thing which is paramount!!!!! yes you can bring a tv from the u.k and pay the customs charge yes you can run the risk of bring one over from the south and get it accross with no problem But what will you do if one day you t.v breaks down or you get a power surge what you going to do take your t.v back to the u.k so its coverd by its guarantee because your t.v wont be covered in cyprus remember its not a worldwide manufactures guarantee its only national, or if you buy it in the south and get away with smuggling it in to the north are you going to run the risk of taking it back to the south and then back in again so in my view paying a extra bit knowing your t.v is covered far outweighs any bit of saving money when you first buy the set!!!! and on most t.v's in the north there is not that much diffrence products like l.g, sony , samsung are nearly the same price cos they have factories in turkey now, or you can go for turkish name brands like beko, arcelik, vestel these are good quality manufactures regards ukturk

I got all my electric goods from Arcelik (pronounced Arjelik!) In May t.v./stand with shelves, & dish-washer were £500 which I thought was o.k. They have always delivered on time & phone first.

Sorry to go off thread slightly but I think this is the first time in 3 years where I have seen a thread so supportive of buying here or at least making all the negatives about not buying here. The price of TV's etc here is falling dramatically and a point to remember is that just because you do not know a particular brand does not mean it is not a "branded" product with a local name. As for bringing with you we brought a full container with us including all modern electric goods. Because we were settling permanently and not intending to work there was no customs duty to pay.

whichever option you go for, make sure you use a voltage regulator, it's a good bit of insurance against the sometimes erratic voltages here.

I think UKturk may know the answer to this one about no sound. Its something about going into the sound menu on the TV and resetting in to "BG" from the UK default settings. Lem

hi guys arçelik is pronounced archelik cos the ç is ch i defo reconmend a surge master if you have the chance to get it in the u.k they are quite cheap from argos can be quite expensive in cyprus for a decent one, i saw this message before about a t.v's coming over from the u.k and not having any sound this is not correct so if so the person who did not have any sound was doing something wrong!!!! the only setting you might have to change is the picture and tv format settings i have bought over t.v's to turkey and so have friends and they have had no problems with sounds if anyone is having probs with sound they should check their connection could be the scart lead thats faulty beko as a make has come on leaps and bounds and now you can find this make all over europe and even in the u.k they are sold thru l.g in europe warm regards ukturk

Answer on the sound question is this. If you have an old TV and try to receive terrestrial TV you will not receive sound unless you get a chip replaced. As far as I am aware all modern TV's will work. However I would think 99.9% of people coming from UK will be using satillite broadcast and therefore not an issue.

hi i read the thread ages ago about the sound. ukturk answered that telling us what to do. but when we came to view our property our adviser at ygor told us a telly will not work , but by that time i knew it was the old type, not flat screen lcd. our plan is we could do with another one at home anyway so for a renatal property it will surfice being a 26inc flat screen . if it gets broken i won't be crying over warrenty as it has run out anyway. then we will probably buy a new one there. will buy the surge protector though. thanks for that uturk

Do not just use surge protector for TV. All of our appliances have them fitted. Friends had 50% of electrical goods destroyed in one go becuase they were not protected. You can buy 4, 6 or 8 way extensoion leads, which are best for computer and peripherals and TV, DVD and Sat. box. But in Argos you can buy a 3 way plug that is a surge protector for about £7, excellent value. For computer we also have a UPS which is absolutley essential.

Please be careful where you buy from, my wife and i went into a certain shop to buy one, the price was on a sticker. When we asked for some advice we were told that the wrong price was on the TV and the proceded to add on another 250ytl. I don,t think all shops are the same but just a bit of friendly advice

hi linda, with analogue tv and bulky crt sets there was a picture/sound separation of 6,5mhz in uk, 6mhz in france and 5.5mhz in western europe... obviously the sound and picture could not be transmitted on the same spot however all flat screen sets will adjust automatically and are multi-system this problem does not affect digital signals we carried a 15inch toshiba flatscreen no probs we watch it in the little 2nd. "bedroom" we adapted as a tv room so are quite close to the screen, tv set mounted on a sliver trolley then you can keep the living room for socal use, music and getting inebriated a 26 inch flatscreen is about the largest you can easily get in a suitcase, tape newspaper over the packaging which itself you can distress and unlikely anyone will bother you from what I saw online, sets in the south are not particularly cheap at all cost of tv's in uk is a bit lower and there is much more choice but if you buy in north cyprus philips, lg and samsung are about £650 for 32 inch (slightly flexible) with samsung ahead on quality by a whisker arcelik looks ok and is a bit cheaper but dealers say is now made in china you can pick up brt 2 on analogue which sometimes features american films otherwise its dvd's, or satellite: as discussed elsewhere a basic free to air system pulling in nilesat will give you bbc world and several english langusge film channels if you have access to a computer ukturk can fix you up with code-cracking software for more channels, better than paying a sub to digiturk being rather poor value for just watching english programmes one other thing you can do is pay 88 quid a year plus vat to the taxpayer-funded bbc for their Prime channel but firstly you need a receiver with card slots, and secondly the bbc literature states the card will be cancelled if you dont use it three months = you lose antiques roadshow and gardeners world andre
