It sounds like your settings have gone to 'American'. Check your settings in 'Control Panel' - 'Regional and Language Options'. Make sure it is set at 'English(United Kingdom)

If you have a laptop without a separate numeric keypad, you have have inadvertantly switched on the numeric function, which can also affect other key settings, try looking for a key 'Fn' (which is normally a different colour) hold this down and press the key marked 'NumLck' (probably in the same colour) - this should reset it back to normal. If you are using a PC, check out the keyboard setting (via control panel if you are using windows) - it should be set for a standard 101 or 102 keys in UK english or US english (it may be shown as plugged in via a USB port or Ps/2) - select the 'properties' for the keyboard and it should show 'the device is working properly' - if all is well. Providing these match your language/keyboard settings the keys should function properly.

continued... All language settings should be for UK english to function (as per key displays) with the above type of keyboard, however some programs will attempt to alter the keyboard to 'US' layout whilst functioning and return them when you close them down, this is normally unnoticed, but If you have a marker in the bottom right corner of screen (taskbar) which mrmally reads 'EN' - but suddenly changes to 'US-En' - this indicates that the program is using a different setting - sometimes this sticks and you have to change it back manually as above. Although this is now rarely seen on Vista/W7 it can still happen on Win XP

If it makes you feel any better Chris, I am running a mac laptop with a windows 7 partition and when I am on Mac the keyboard is the way you want it and on windows is the way you have it now. I am just in the habit of checking now whenever I press the keys
