My laptop has chucked a wobbly and all I can get is Cyprus44. No email, nothing. Can get into you tube via links from the forum but not on Google search. Can anyone tell me what to do?

This happens a lot to me. I can only get one website sometimes and any other website I want to look at a message appears and says 'oops, the link seems to be broken'. I just put it down to the ISP.

Its been like this since last night and it has glitched before but I was able to get to my mail via igoogle-my account-settings. Not today though. I know there are some computer whizzes out there, just have to hang on for one. Like waiting for a bus, I'm sure there will be one along in a minute

Before you go down the Sys restore route you may only need to do something as simple as a disc clean on your C drive highlight auto detect and fix errors and this may help.

I know this is a stupid thing to ask , but have you looked at the bottom right hand side of your computer , it has a 2 computer sign and does that have the little sign of a kind of blue ball attached to it ? Simbas

Has your computer had any recent Microsoft updates? They could be at fault or maybe your virus / spyware checker are "getting in the way" For example I don't like Norton as it gets in the way of everything and teaching it what not to do is a full time occupation. You might need to disable one at a time and maybe even your firewall but I would suggest you do a full backup, a boot disc and a resore point before doing them just in case of the worst. (Even if you use an expert - ours does so before going out on a limb.)

| You can try cleaning your history and cookies cache. Go to tools, Intyernet Options and on the general tab there should be either delete history or settings and when you open settings you can then delete the cookies. Just remember that there will be know history left for your browser so any websites you want to save for future reference either write down or save the file you see in settings, view files as a document that you can look at later. | do the following start - run then type in cmd and hit enter this will bring up a command window with a flashing prompt. At the prompt type ping bbc.o.uk then copy and paste the results here (you have to select 'select' from the command window option to select an area of text then copy, then paste it in here) this might give a clue as to what is going on |

use 'edit - mark' in the command window to select the text for copying. You should get something like this C:\Users\Erol>ping bbc.co.uk Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=104ms TTL=113 Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=95ms TTL=113 Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=96ms TTL=113 Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=102ms TTL=113 Ping statistics for 212.58.224.138: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 95ms, Maximum = 104ms, Average = 99ms C:\Users\Erol>

Looks ok except for the one packet lost. Can you not get to bbc.co.uk website then ? If you can try ping with the address of a website you can not currently reach and post the ping results here

Wekk it would not seem to be the internet connection , as the ping test confirms that you can resolve the name (turn bbc.co.uk into the numerical address 212.58.224.138 and you can send a packet to that address and get a reciept back). I assume you are using internet explorer as your web browser ? You could try downloading another browser like firefox or chrome , but if you cant reach the websites needed for the download that will be a problem. It would be useful to see if the problem affects other browsers or if it is just Interent explorer. You could try these to see if you can download an alternative browser http://www.google.com/chrome/ or http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Hi Vidal The fact that you can get 44 indicates you have a live internet link, but the results from the 'ping' show that you are losing some of the connection. My initial suggestion would be to run a full virus check, as there is possibly something interrupting the connection. A virus can also affect the firewall which may now be set to high (blocking all cookies/pop-ups which some programs require). Check whether the firewall is blocking all/any other programs (email etc - if so change the settings to allow them through. This will help show your system is OK. Apart from the above -Packet loss (as shown on your printout) is normally caused by a 'noisy line' have you placed anything near the wiring/router/dongle which may affect it. If none of the above works get your ISP to check the line, the fault may be with something new that they have done, or if you are using a wireless system, at one of the relay stations they use

Erolz and greengate. Have done everything you have suggested and run a scan. Nothing doing. I have left a message for my Digital Supreme guy and he is going to call me in the morning. Thanks so much for all your help. Vidal.

By George I think she's got it!!! I went into tools>add-ons>plug ins and went through them, disabling them one by one. It was one of the google plug ins that was stopping it. All fine now. Learned loads today, thanks guys. Vidal
