Hi all

Husband and I had our honeymoon in TNRC in July, and fell in love with the place! Returning in may with both sets of parents, staying in Hibiscus Villa near Alsanack and then 3 nights at the hideaway club.

I would really like some ideas of resturants that locals eat in please. Traditonal dishes, nice setting etc. I have heard amazing things about the kyrenia taverna and that is a definate on our list.

Thanks in advance, cant wait to see the sun again! 113 days and counting! hahaha

Cenap - Alsancak (The Meze might be enough for some)

Aphrodite on the road from Lapta to Karsiaka (the owner is a character and the food is very good too)

Kervan bar/restaurant overlooking Kervansary beach, great to eat and watch the sun go down, always locals in there.

Sele in old turkish quarter Girne' local owned, great menu.

Aphrodite, the owner, yes a real character, if you ask him he will bring Isabella the donkey in to meet you! then his wife will chase her out! good fun! The menu is whatever his wife decides to cook that day!

Cenap as mentioned above for the meze

I honestly think all the 'local' owned places are wonderful places to eat and chat with the owners etc

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!! x

We might be able to assist with your mountain walks please email me off board with

1] A phone number I can call you on

2] What dates

3] How many would be walking 2, 4 or 6 people

4] What level you want the walks to be very easy, easy medium or hard

5] Any other details that may help

The Archway restaurant in Zeytinlik - I went there for the first time last month and it was fabulous, traditional cypriot food and the place was packed with locals. Not the cheapest meal ever but not overly expensive either and I've never eaten so much in my life. Turn off the main road in Girne at the Astro supermarket, follow that road and the restaurant is clearly signposted.

I would recommend the Archway too, lovely setting and the food is always excellent. Somewhere we have found now though, that does a full meze for 35 lira, and is excellent value with live traditional music = The Meyhane next door to Malika nightclub on the Girne to Bellapais road. Food is excellent, you need a good appetite, and the service is excellent too. Only one thing, best to avoid parking there on Friday and Saturday when the nightclub is open - they leave the cars all over the place and you will get blocked in.

Charcos in Alsancak is also very good. As is Sevkets on the main road by Aphrodite. If venturing a bit further afield then the restaurant by Five Finger Mountain and the turning to Buffavento is excellent, traditional again, with good food and lovely setting.

Cenaps - Alsancak (Best Meze)

Ambiance - Karaoglanoglu (Best a la' carte and the best setting)

Nosheens - Alsancak (Best Indian)

Fast food Cafe - Alsancak (Best Kebab)

Bar 15's - Alsancak (Best homemade Burgers)

There are loads and loads of other brilliant places to eat!!!

You have also made an excellent choice with the Hideaway - fantastic hotel, in a beautiful setting, run by a lovely family.

If you go into Kyrenia then you must try Efendi's in the Turkish quarter and only a short walk from the Colony Hotel. Enjoy.

Claire,

After all the local food and you want a change to Italian go to Guido's (near the golden lady turnoff to Alsancak) it is hard to beat anywhere.

If you decide to go to the old harbour the Carob Restaurant is excellent.

Book in advance and request a table overlooking the harbour - 0392 815 6277

Yes do watch the harbour prices. I got clued up pretty quickly but 3 years ago my other half wanted one drink overlooking the sea. I tried to explain but i had to give in as mother was with us. When we received the bill the EFFes was 9 ytl, The Local gins were 10 YTL and the can of Fanta 6 YTL. Other half doesnt like the harbour so much now so at least we don't go there very often. If we do, The max for a beer/spirits will be 5YTL or we keep walking. Also anything in Euros gets a very cold shoulder from us. Now that we have frequented most places at least once, Liasons mex/tex is a firm favourite. Happy hour there has everbody smiling.

Other places for good, local food are Sevener on the main road in Alsancak, Tervetuloa Hotel again in Alsancak on the road down to the Merit Hotel and Lemba high up in Lapta. Another great restaurant is Green Palace in Karsiyaka. Sounds like a Chinese but is actually a local TC restaurant. It's really cheap and they do a great T-bone steak and garlic prawns oh and tandoori chicken as well as all the kebabs.

Tervatoula Hotel gets my vote.

Guido's, JK's or the Punjab for Sunday lunch and for something a bit special try San Tropez Restaurant.

While you are staying at The Hideaway, try Levant Restaurant in Karmi, further up the road.

Straight over the road and take the first left (fire station on the right) and go straight ahead and after you've passed the car park on the right you'll come to a T junction - turn right and it's straight ahead of you.

Hİ there, as a Cypriot ı can reccomend you few places for kebab;

Niyazi's

Ambiance

Archway

Yaprak tantuni (this place is less posh however there are different style of kebabs, and they are expert at cooking tantuni )

You should definately try Turkish pizza (lahmacun) in bellapais place called Paşa.

For döner kebab ( Anibal) is very famous place ı don't think there is any better dönner than Anibal.

For traditional hand made patty type food you can try (Aşkı hamur evi).

also for fast food Eziç have spacious menü.

Hope you will try some of those because they are all quality places. have a good journey.

If you want fast food then try "Fast Food" in centre of Alsancak village for great doner at lunchtime.

Agree with most above except avoid anywhere near harbour in Girne. food at best is OK but prices are purely for tourists. You obvioulsy are more discerning than that.
