What is the age of retirement here for a foreigner and can a retired person work on a commission only basis without a work permit, as can a local student?

The short answer is NO, whatever your age; work permit required. Geoff

Not quite true - if you are over 65 then you can work a few hours (I think 10) per week without a work permit. But please check - do not take my word for it.

I'll think you will find that the answer is NO. And if you are showing people houses, selling them and taking commission (is this the sort of commission you mean?) - then the consequences if found out would almost certainly be deportation and maybe a fine!! The age of retirement here is 55 I think for TC citizens. G

It's even much more complicated than suggested above. You need a work permit to work, but if you are 65 you are too old and don't get a work permit anyway. And so, when you are too old, but qualify as an expert on Cyprus medieval history - and lecture about it for 100+ official TRNC guides - and if you speak six foreign languages and Dutch, some languages absolutely not spoken by any TRNC guide - and if you could bring and guide groups from certain Western European countries - no, Sir, you are "too old". Yes, I'm 66, but I'm sure I could do a lot better than many of the paper circulating civil servants here. TRNC, how to commit touristic suicide? Spend PR money in Oslo, Hamburg and Sout Korea. But don't accept the help that is available.

You need an employer to get you a work permit. Doesnt matter how old you are. The age thing only applies to CYPRIOTS. Anyone working (that is receiving payment for services rendered) is ILLEGAL.

Msg 9, denizkisi: (...) You need an employer to get you a work permit. (...) => Right. (...) Doesnt matter how old you are. (...) => Wrong. Found out by someone who wanted to employ me in the tourism business and asked his accountant to apply for a work permit. And so said my accountant, when I checked.

Message 6 I am no expert. I read this info in Cyprus Today about 9 months ago when they were talking about a crackdown on illegal working. Maybe Elko can help or your solicitor should know.

This is a complicated deal. From a certain age, you can work some weekly hours without a permit. I would suggest that you go and see Cenk Bolayir who is a lawyer in Girne. He has good knowledge of this type of stuff. His phone number is 0392-8150544. His office is across the road, to the left of Girne Belediye.

Surprising answer Hans, because when I was working for GAU, many of the staff were and still are (of course!)over 65 and all it needed was a piece of paper to show youwould not be claiming social service money -viz pensions, I suppose. But maybe they have changed the rule. I know for a fact that a couple of the top guys in the staff are over 65, and are over 70. But maybe that is if you are already employed, but no new applications allowed. It is all horribly confusing, especially as different people give different answers.
