Hi all

Our internet service has been terrible for the past several months, we've been told because of people working on phone lines at the telecommunications office and now because of frozen pipes/lines in Turkey. We're thinking of changing to 3G. (Not sure exactly how 3G gets its signals as bit of internet thickie!) Have any of these problems affected 3G users in last few months or has your connection been on all the time? If you have 3G would be great to here some feedback.

Many thanks

We've had 3G since they first launched and it's always been very reliable and quick connection - very little down time.

We were a bit p*ssed when they uped the price by 20tl to 90TL and lowered the download from 'unlimited' to 10Gig per month. But since then it has settled down and we are very happy. Just be careful if you are the sort of person that downloads films and stuff or watches live streams as it will eat up your 10 Gigs no problem. But if you are just email and generally web surfing it's the best. Infact, you may be better off with the 4Gig package for 60TL if this is the case.

It works through the Turkcell mobile phone system and can be used ALMOST everywhere. Telsim do a simllar service.

GOOD LUCK,

G

We have had 3G since Jan 09 and whilst we had problems with the service from march through to august, we are now very happy with what we are receiving. I was very cynical when our downloads were good in august as I kept saying it was because everyone went away for the summer but they have continued, so I am eating my words at the mo!

As St George has said, we were also not too happy with them when they moved the goalposts and we suddenly became limited on downloads after we had committed to 12 months upfront.

We live in Catalkoy and have been watching live sports with very few interruptions.

We have just changed to 10gb in order to download movies and stream UK tv and we will wait and see if this is enough at 90tl per month but prior to that we used it just for email, reading uk papers (and getting depressed) and 4gbs at 60 tl was plenty for this.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. Do you know how many GB roughly you would use by using live streaming?

kibrissibel - the answer is that it varies greatly depending on what it is you are streaming. Audio will take much less than video for example and higher quality of either will use more than lower quality of either.

You best bet might be to use a seperate program that allows you to monitor what is being sent and recived via a given connection on your PC and keeps running totals for you.

I personally am a fan of DU meter which can be found here

http://www.dumeter.com/

It is not free software , but there is a 30 day free trial which you could use to test out the various sites you are streaming from to see what kind of usage in MB/GBs they require per unit of time, or you could just buy it and use it to keep track of your total usage.

Depends on the stream kbps download. I think things like TV catchup run at about 500kps so you will get quite alot of hours out of it, and i watch P2P football - a couple of games a week and it doesn't use much. If you are running TV streams every evening for a few hours though you may find it only lasts a couple of weeks. Also, depends where you are to how quick the sped will be.

If you want to download lots of films and TV for viewing at other times you can get the 10G+ packahes which allows unlimited downloading between 2am and 8am when the spees will be very fast and you can download alot of stuff - not convenient for some people. but if you can get it on at 2am you can just leave it to download for 6 hours!!!

Thanks all for the info. I've started trading a few shares and have 5/6 tabs open at a time with various live stream prices on, but no idea if this would count as a download? Presumably it would as it's a live stream?

The volume of data on such applications would be extremely minimal. You check this by using something like DU Meter, but really if its not video streaming then you are not likely to get into usage issues.

Type 'Durum' as a text message from your 3g and send it to '1111' - they will then text you how much you have used.

Sibel,

A friend of ours switched from Turkcell to Telsim as their 3G offering worked out considerably cheaper.

I'm not sure of the figures but it's worth investigating coverage at your home address and the relative costs.

Emma,

We use Turkcell 3 G in Malatya and it works ok most of the time. We are at the top end of Malatya so if you are before the village you should have good reception.

sibel,

Before doing too much work, contact the supplier to check if it is available in your area. Simple I know but if you cannot receive........

Hi Jayne,

I live in the Tatlisu area & last year had 3g Turkcell.

It worked fine but I found it a bit slow so subscribed to an internet

company instead.

I gave it to a friend of mine here & he is still using it.

Jayne,

If you are really interested in 3G how about finding someone who has it and is willing to come to your house with their laptop and test it for you, this is what we did.

If you cannot find anyone near you, call me 0542 842 8713 and I am willing to meet you.

Thanks Sue, noted your number. I am going in to Turkcell to pay mobile phone bill today so will ask them but will call you if I need to. Many thanks for your kind offer.

Jayne, I've just put this on another post but we use Telsim 3G in Tatlisu and have had no bother for 12 months. We weren't impressed with Turkcell, way too slow, didn't support skype and they were much more expensive. I've been so pleased it's been working so well through all the upgrades etc as I've spent almost the last 3 weeks skype calling all sorts of friends etc in UK - both on webcam and to landline - with no dropped calls or delays! Worth knowing in case you need to make lots of calls in an emergeny as I did

Are you sure that you are getting 3G (blue light) and not 2G(green light) in Tatlisu?

Yes, Hatty we're still getting the pale blue light for 3g and it's constant. Jayne - The Telsim office is just along from Mr Pound, just along from Comak. We paid 49tl a month for the 3GB package but that was last march. We got the 12 month deal and got the dongle free. We'll be renewing it again when it's due! Happy surfing
