According to the evening news on local TV tonight,an agreement has been reached with ROC officials to allow TRNC registered rental cars to cross the checkpoint. The rental cars will go through the same procedure as private vehicles. http://www.skycyprus.com

Good news if true. I wonder whether the insurance rules will be the same as crossing from south to north, third party cover only, payable at the border.

There has never been any real issue with hire cars going through crossing, I know of several people who have excercised their right to do so. Problem is the hire agreement from the Car Hire company. It states in no uncertain terms that "THIS VEHICLE MUST NOT BE TAKEN OUTSIDE THE TRNC". If you do so and there is a problem you are up the creek without a paddle, you will not be repatriated and the car may be impounded. As the hirer you will then be liable for all costs. Friend who runs a rental company sates that anyone found taken a car across will be black listed with all hire companies.

Apparently, it only applies to TC drivers. So who does most of the hiring in the TRNC, visitors or TC residents. Isn't this discrimination? Lem

Alison, I am not so sorry, but you are incorrect. It is possible and has been done regularly. Not going to encourage the practice by telling how because the hire companies are not happy. It is also entirley legal the only constraint is the invalidation of your hire contract.

Last word. As you do not live here then unfortunatley you are not in a position to find out how the system works or call somebodies trust in to disrepute. You as a tourist will have been turned away from the crossing point you obvously tried to use. On some of the other boards on North Cyprus you will find the answer but as we have a friend who runs a car hire business I am not personally going to respond further.

it remainds me few years ago when people wanted to rent from the south and go to the north - i heard so many contradictory stories about it - until people experient going through the border and explain to convince - so now you can do it but still tourist coming to the south are told ,, i it know because my friends told me so when they come in holidays, that they cannot cross the border - we just rassure them and tell them how to do it - it is going to be the same from the north to the south - but it will take time until people believe it is possible !!! next month i will try - my husband is cypriot - with a rented car because i would prefer to rent in the north and go sometimes to the south if possible and my family will rent as well so we will see and if they turn us back we will be able to say what happened !!! but i am sure some of us will try before a month time !!!

like in the south, you will have car renters willing to let their cars on the south and some others will not - it is actually the case - so the one in the north accepting car renters to go to the south will make more money than others !!!!

I've been informed by Berkan from Pacific Rent A Car that you need to get written permission from the car rental company in order to pass it to the south. Their car hire contract says that you can only drive within TRNC. So, if you pass to the south, you will be violating the contract and will be liable for any damages should you get involved in an accident, etc.

Hi all, Thought you may be intersted in this article from the Cyprus Star. The Cyprus chamber of commerce (KTTO) has said that vehicles that have number plates beginning with "Z" will be able to crossover to southern cyprus just like the rest of the privateley owned vehicles in N.Cyprus, Regards, Paul.

It doesn't matter what the rules are, if the Car Hire Company says no, then its NO. To take a vehicle South, you need South insurance. To get that Insurance you need an MOT/Tax form from the South. You can only get that form if you present the vehicle at Metahan, with the vehicle docs. How many hire cars have the vehicle docs in the glove box? Once the rules are clearer, some companies MAY get the correct paperwork to cross to the South but they might not as well.

Hi all, I am with the chamber of commerce on this one who state that " there will be no requirement to provide any "additional" documents, but that "the same formalities and documents will be used for cars that are rented and have number plates beginning with "Z".Te plot thickens, Regards, Paul.
