Open a Nationwide account and have it paid in there, draw it out each month at an ATM machine in the TRNC

Nationwide do not charge for doing this.

I heard recently that Nationwide foreign withdrawals are no longer ALL free of charge. I cannot remember the details.

5 March 2009 - Britain's biggest building society is abandoning its 'no-fee' policy on overseas debit and credit card transactions. We tell you why holidays will no longer be as rosy with Nationwide...

Nationwide dealt a blow to its four million FlexAccount customers this week, as it announced it was scrapping the no-fee overseas transaction policy on its debit and credit cards.*

Until now, the brand famous for its 'proud to be different' motto has absorbed any extra overseas charges. However, from 6th May, it will start to pass on fees charged by Visa for transactions abroad - currently 0.84% (rising to 1% in July).

The first thing worth mentioning is that for transactions made within most European countries, the status quo remains. So whether you buy something from a European website, or pay for goods on the Continent, you will not be charged any additional fees.

In addition, if you own one of Nationwide's cash cards, as opposed to a debit card, the changes also won't apply, as these cards are issued by rival MasterCard.

However, Nationwide says cash cards will soon follow in Visa's footsteps. You can see a full list of countries not affected by these changes here.

Cyprus = NO FEE

Turkey = NO FEE

It does not have the TRNC on the list. Whether it would be treated as 'Turkey' I don't know.

um...

there is the well-known nationwide concession that mercifully applies in turkey/nrth cyprus

...but it is still possible you will be charged a fee of a couple of quid by the atm you use in cyprus

with payment going to the bank that owns that cash machine

I say this because a friend of mine was charged by the atm machine for withdrawing ytl

No Nationwide charges here as the banks are classed as Turkey

You will find it very difficult to open a bank account in the south. They will require proof of address because of EU money laundering regulations and most of them ask for an electricity bill. They will not accept a TRNC address as they say they cannot confirm these.

Why not have it paid into your UK account and open a Turk Bank sterling account. You can then pay in a UK bank cheque every month which they will not charge you for. It does take a while for the cheques to clear, but your money remains at the same level. You can then decide when to change into TL as and when exchange rates are more favourable.

Nationwide Flexaccount works for me. No charges and good rate of exchange when drawing Turkish Lire on my Debit Card.
