It appears that Mr Erdogan has had recent proposal from Gordon Brown to discuss the Cyprus problem with a view to the Guarantor Powers ,TRNC and ROC getting to a solution. I read this as significant indication that there will now be some real pressure to resolve the problem. Mr Moon has also visited Cyprus this weekend...not to holiday! I do hope that matters move forward with some element of urgency. I can see a continued slow deterioration if the international community rely and hope that current talks will bring settlement.

I think Turkey should just tell the EU that they are fed up with being painted as the bad guy all the the time, and therefore are going to annex the TRNC as it is in the interest of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Turkey, I believe refrain from irrational decisions to close borders and or take actions that would be detrimental to their current stance of co-operation with Europe. The ROC on the other hand continue to make moves that are certainly irritating to some European member states. Certainly Mr Anan is likely to be quite annoyed by now. I believe that Turkey is endeavouring to take the moral high ground and to remain calm and rational. Turkey maintains a very strong position politically, economically and geographically. Certainly the administartion will join any negotiations as a gaurentee power named in the Cyprus constitution. The other Guarantor powers being Britain and Greece, will, i believe join the UN around the table and force a settlement. The Turkish hand in this particular card game will certainly be relatively strong. I think the EU influence in the game will be somewhat diluted because they have already been shown to bugger things up on more than one ocassion.

The RoC should have their *EU membership suspended until they agree to co-operate genuinely in an as equitable solution as can be implemented practically. EU have plenty of perfectly valid excuses for taking such action, one of which is the title deeds scam, which affects so many people, but the RoC has failed to address. The RoC's antagonistic stance toward TRNC can only be ameliorated by such *action - i.e., hit them where it hurts - in their pockets. This is a tiny island with a miniscule population - both sides need to be made to come to their senses for their, although they cannot see it, mutual long term benefit.
