Skimmer pools cost less to build, they use less power to run and they don't lose as much water through leakage and evaporation. You can fit them with a solar cover and the wind won't blow it away.

Overflow pools look nice and sound nice. Why does everyone have them?

Because they don't know any better at the time.

Or, build an overflow pool with skimmer boxes built in, pipes running into into overflow gulley with valves on (3").

Open the valves to use as a skimmer, say in winter with winter cover on, or in summer at night to put on solar cover.

Close the valves to use as an overflow if you are having a party and want it to look nice.

Other way is have a nice looking overflow, and add aditional pipework with a valve in the pump room to bypass the check valve, so at night (when the pump is off) you can open the valve, drop the water level 2-3 inches and pull the cover over, and greatly reduce evapouration.

skimmer pool are good for small bodies of water that don't have a surge tank.

Overflow or wet all skimming (This system is generally built in with the pool) is accepted as the preferred method for swimming pools and the vast majority of public pools are set up this way as a mater of fact it is mandatory according to most health departments. skimming is the best way to remove pathogens that are harmful to heath quickly from the waters surface put it through filtration and return the water to deeper regions of the pool where disinfection of the water is more effective. However wet wall or overflow skimming requires the use of a balance tank or constant automatic toping up to work properly.

What are the price differences between a skimmer and an overflow on a 10m x 5m pool? (roughly)

Cost difference probably about £1500 less to build. Loads less to run.

Well said Vaughan. But to add that skimmer pools have no balance tank to leak, no gulley to leak and habour bacterior and algae and no plastic grids to hold rotting leaves which leads algae. Not to mention that overflow pools have a non return valve which gives problems with debris becoming trapped stopping it's action causing the water level in the pool to fall and the level in the balance tank to rise - if the top of the balance tank is not sealed(sadly often the case) water will leak away slowly emptying the pool.

The 2 most important rules to follow when considering having a pool are:

1). Don't let your builder build it - he will struggle enough to build your house. Swimming pools are a specialist job so use an established pool company.

2). Choose a skimmer pool for reduced initial and maintenance costs(the rest of the world is unlikely to be wrong).

One other disadvantage of an overfow pool is it attracts pidgeons , who are able to "paddle" whilst they drink . A minor consideration I know but they can be pests
