Petsas let you take car north too. We hired from them at Easter. We just ordered a basic small car but they gave us an air con medium one for the same price. Worth a try.

I also used Petsas. I picked up the car at paphos and then drove to their office in Nicosia where they provided me with fully comp car insurance for the north. It was quite funny because I had to wait 15 minutes whilst the guy cycled over the border and purchased the insurance from a comapany they have arrangement with in the north

Make sure you can get fully comp insurance, the insurance at the border is only third party. My mate ran into the back of a van at easter time with a hired south car he ended up with a £650 cyp bill from the hire company who took the money from his credit card, there was not much damage to the car but he thought he was covered,

Lindalu,

It never ceases to amaze me just how many people either don't realize that the insurance at the border is third party only, or are simply happy to take a chance on not having an accident!! I wouldn't insure my car in the UK third party only, where the roads are considerably safer!!

Ilovecyprus,

Interesting about Petsas. Do they give it to you IN WRITING that you are insured FULLY COMP in the North? If it is fully comp then sounds good, but I would require to see it in black and white.

I did ask for fully comp and they said that it was

The only problem was trying to find their office in Nicosia.

millzer,

We knew it was third party, and was happy to carry on. At the time we thought that was our only option.

Finding information about the trnc and laws and regulations is very difficult even with websites like this. I am still learning new things.

Strange as I have had our Greek friends ask around Insurance companies in the South and NO-ONE will do fully comp for vehicles going North side so if anyone knows for sure that we can get Fully Comp, can someone post the name of the company please. Thanks

there was a similar thread a couple of weeks ago where it was claimed that fully comp was available at the crossing. An even earlier thread claimed that Avis would give fully comp but only if the booking was made from UK and the insurance for TRNC was arranged at the time of booking (I think this was the condition stated- the old grey matter is a bit foggy on that one)

At metehan crossing they offer Fully comprehensiv insurance for about 70 euros as opposed to around 30 for third party. I have not been offfered this at Pyla. The insurance was clearly stamped Fully Comp,

I wonder if someone can help. I am shortly arriving into Larnaca on a Sunday evening about 9pm. My wife and I are then picking up a hire car and driving to an apartment in Kyrenia. Can you please tell me, (a) How long it will take me (approx) and (b) which would be the best border crossing to use. Many thanks in anticipation of your advice.

Many thanks Paul. I am expecting a lot of changes since I was last over there, I left in 1972 would you believe,

after living in Limassol for 3 years. There was no border then. ("Ah" those were the days). Thanks once again for your help.

Regards

Eddie

Hi, I crossed over in May in an Avis car from Larnaca and bought fully comp insurance at the border for 70EURO. The guy at the border told me I could have arranged this in the uk, but having checked with AVIS UK, this is not now the case at the cost varies according to local exchange rates (or should do, but doesnt ever go down!). They do like to be told you intend to cross over, but there is no problem even if you wait until you collect it at Larnaca to do so. Most people at the UK call centre dont even know that there is a Northern "part" to Cyprus!

Apparently you used to be able to buy the extra insurance at Larnaca airport Avis desk, but now the forms have to be printed (not handwritten) it can only be obtained at the border.

I use AVIS on a regular basis and never have any trouble with this aspect of their service, as for getting their Ford Fiesta's over the mountains and up the hill to Karmi, well thats another matter!

Hi, From msg 13

At metehan crossing they offer Fully comprehensiv insurance for about 70 euros

How long does this cover you for?

When crossing from the North to the south we pay 25 euros per month. Is this 3rd party only?
