Hi Irina, there are several groups of so called "Russians" here , we are not organised yet but we are going to establish a Russian - Turkish association ( it is in the process). You can contact me 0533 864 3543 (Marina) I know a lot of Russian speaking people here , we often meet , celebrate all Russian ( and not only Russian) festivals , go to picnics, concerts , parties together.

| This is the time to eat Russian Blini served with lashings of Smetana ( like creme fraiche ) - The Russians celebrate the end of winter.. Maslenitsa in London on Sunday .. it was VERY cold so my wife's friends brought vodka to 'warm us up' If the idea of Russian food doesn't appeal you need to think again... | A Russian restaurant (I would call it , ex-Soviet) "Babushka" (which means "Grandmother")in Alsancak - if you go towards the Riverside complex you will see the sign to it. Another Russian restaurant- bar "EuroAsia " ( again ex-Soviet, not Russian ) is situated down from the Astro supermarket in Girne ( the street between a petrol station and a beauty saloon). In EuroAsia restaurant -bar business lunches including 3-course meal cost only 10 lira per person. In these restaurants you can try not only Russian food but dishes from ex-Soviet republics. Enjoy your meal! |

Irina, If you head down the small road across from Astro supermarket on the main road there is a small Kazak restaurant on the right. My wife and several other russians (group description) are heading there for lunch. Paul

proger1 Message 20 ' If you head down the small road across from Astro supermarket on the main road there is a small Kazak restaurant on the right' You have just made my day, having worked and lived in Azerbaijan for 4 years my favourite restaurants were Georgian and Kazak. Now I know there is a Kazak restaurant I am happy but is there any Georgian restaurants in the TRNC? AJ

I admit that I only remember this from the good old days of Comrad Breznjev or another nice red Comrad, when I had to travel the Soviet Union for the paper I used to work for. From Leningrad to Moscow to Kiev. I don't remember one good meal. First of all journalists were not allowed to go where they pleased so our 'choice' for a meal was Hotel International (or was it Intercontinental?) and something called borsjt (spelling?) was about the best the kitchen could offer. I do hope for the Russians that the circumstances have strongly improved..! P.S. After being so critical I promise to try one of the restaurants mentioned above - but which one..?!

Dear Hans, Borsch / борщ is beetroot soup - it is Ukrainian in origin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borscht It is clear you never had a good one with a nice dollop of Smetana - 'soured cream' ( Creme fraiche) I once thought that 'Soviet' cooking would be boring... but now I know it has taken the best of all the ex-republics.. from Ukraine to Uzbeck to Georgian ( my particular fav! ) You should try again with an open mind ;)
