We used to think Pertev was the mutts nuts until we took the dog kev rescued from falling into an empty pool to him, he insisted the dog was suffering from bruising and nothing more, I asked him to xray which he refused, after several requests for an xray, all refused it turned out the dog had hip displacement and need surgery, he also shut this dogs tail in the car door and when the dog screamed in pain, Pertev told me off for making a fuss of him, unreal. Kont my another of my dogs went to Pertev to be spayed, he did a very bad job as he only removed her uterus and not her ovaries, he couldn't be bothered I guess, so now comes into season and all the time and we have to keep her in or if we are lucky and catch it in time, give her pills to try and stop it. I would not now recommend him to deal with a goldfish.... Sibel at Pet Life is wonderful and I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Please would some kind person post contact details for Sibel at 'Pet Life'. Is this the lady who used to have her surgery close to Amanda's Auction? What's the address and directions how to get to 'Pet Life', please? We urgently need to get our (adopted stray) Alsation bitch speyed - to include removal of the uterus, because she's just finished being on heat and we're certain she's been impregnated, but we can't, however much we've tried, persuade her to get into the car - it's a real problem. Any sensible advice will be most gratefully received - thank you in anticipation!

When we had to take Krall to the vet for the first time he wouldnt get in the car, so Kev picked him up and sat in the back with him and i drove, he was scared but he got used to it quickly and now he loves going out in the car, infact everytime we get in the car he wants to come lol. Just be firm, pick her up and push her in and sit with her and cuddle her, when you get there hold onto her to make sure she doesn't try to bolt out of the car!

Deecyprus: Thank you very much for the directions. Firdez speyed the stray cat we adopted - Firdez is a sweetie! She was then located up the road from Amanda's Auction. Now, I understand, she has moved to behind the 'Pia Bella', but not resuming her normal work, such as operations. Our main problem is that 'our' Alsation has, obviously, in the past been extremely maltreated and beaten; so much so, that if one tries to touch her 'shoulders' (for want of a better word!) or hindquarters, she will definitely bite - I found this out while stroking her! She a big dog and terrified of the car - never mind getting into it. So, the nearest vet to us is Pertev - somewhere near the Passport Restaurant. Before you posted the warning that Pertev does not remove the uterus, we had been warned about this before by some friends. This may be his standard policy, but surely he will if requested? Maybe the only solution is to get 'our' dog completely anaesthetised before...Cont'd.

Cont'd from Msg 14: trying to get her into a vehicle. But the question now is: is there a vet who would assist; i.e., call to our house, bring a muzzle, and give the dog the necessary injection? Even if Pertev agrees to remove the uterus, we would need to walk the dog to his surgery, which (not for us!) but for an ageing Alsation with arthritis is, we feel, too much of an ordeal for the poor animal - especially just before undergoing such an operation. We're at our wits end to know what to do........................ ?

Sorry, Oleander and Dee - you're right - my abject apologies! However, we want, and have been advised for the dog to have a full hysterectomy - isn't that best and, indeed, the only way to stop every stray dog from miles around to be coming on our property, barking, fighting, p1ssing, sh1tting and carrying on?

Scruff/Msg 13: 'also hope she continues after the baby is born.' This implies that she is not working 'fully'? I second BB's question: is anyone standing in for her and, if so, please would some kind person post the contact telephone number - thanks in anticipation.

Re. hysterectomy vs. ovariohysterectomy I thought there must be a reason for leaving the ovaries when spaying and did a bit of research. This is what I found: There are many serious risks of spaying, particularly for large and giant breeds: -Greatly increased risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer; fatal) -Greatly increased risk of hemangiosarcoma (another extremely common fatal cancer) -Greatly increased risk of orthopedic disorders (hip dysplasia and other bone problems) -Greatly increased risk of urinary incontinence -Greatly increased risk of hypothyroidism -Greatly increased risk of potentially fatal adverse reactions to vaccines -Greatly increased risk of urinary tract tumours & TCC (bladder cancer) The above risks are all caused by the lack of estrogen, which is caused by removal of the ovaries. I suggest that anybody considering spaying their dog should discuss all options with their vet. I use Pertev and think he is excellent!

Tenakoutou Just a suggestion....... Why not ring Pertev and ask his advice. When we take our loopy dog to have his coat trimmed there they give him a herbal remedy that according to Pertev makes them feel as if they have drunk a bottle of brandy!! Makes them feel relaxed and is much safer than giving them an anesthetic. I think it's a natural product called Rescue Remedy? It may be the solution to getting your dog to the vet without stressing him out. Good luck.

Hm seems like we're all in favour of the best 2 vets on the island! I must admit I'm a great fan of Sibel after the kind, caring way she helped us with the deaths of our 2 dogs we brought with us from UK. I can honestly say I've never met a more caring person who isn't in it just for the money. Our 2 "new" dogs drag us up the path and sit waiting by the door for Auntie Ingrid to let them in! One of ours was really timid but now she runs around the waiting room (when there's no other patients of course) and plays with Sibel, Ingrid and Emma. I would recommend Pet Life to anyone and several of our friends have changed from using Pertev to Sibel after they watched her in action with our dogs I just hope she gives birth to a dalmation then she can carry on working!!!!

Thanks, Puppylover! Actually, when I phoned Pertev about 3 weeks ago, he did suggest that we give the dog a 'relaxant', which he said he would supply. At that stage, we didn't realise that he seems to prefer to only remove the uterus and leave the ovaries. For anyone reading this, please note that it should be noted that we haven't yet asked Pertev what, exactly, the 'operation' will involve - therefore, having never dealt with Pertev, we don't yet know his stance/advice on the matter. Thanks, everyone, for your advice!

Hi Booitsme, As we now own our 4th Dalmation, Firdez says we are mad as most people only ever have one of those due to their energetic character, I can only hope she doesn't give birth to a Dalmation! She loves ours enough anyway! Sounds like if we ever need a different vet, if Firdez has a long leave, then Sibel would be the one. Thanks to all for pointing out where she is as we hadn't heard of her before.

Hi Panchocat, I really can't recommend Sibel enough. We were recommended her by a top business man in Lefkosa when we went to the airport to pick ours up. Between him and his family they have 7 dogs and take them ALL to Sibel! He gave us her phone number and we haven't looked back since. I'm being totally selfish hoping she has a dalmation as we can then get to play with him/her when we go to the vets. She has a lovely dalmation called Cuba so maybe she would be prepared for the ensuing chaos Sibel is due her baby the end of may/ beginning of june I think so we're trying to persuade her that if it's NOT a dalmation they do have some nice cosy cat beds there that would be ideal to keep the baby safe while she's at work! Don't think her husband was too impressed with that suggestion though.

Just to clarify that when we discovered our dog Kont had come in to season after her spaying..I telephoned Pertev to query what he had done and he told both myself and Kevin that he had removed both her uterus and ovaries, he didn't... We took her to Sibel who tried her best to find the ovaries but did tell us that she couldn't gaurantee it would work, sadly it didn't and I went through what I can only describe as 'guilt' for having put her through another operation. I would not use Pertev again, the man is useless.

So, Deecyprus, from reading your post, it appears that Sibel (who I don't know, or Pertev either for that matter) did no better than Pertev? Does this mean that Kont still comes 'on heat', with all the attendant worrisome problems?

Tenakoutou, sorry I didnt explain clearly, Sibel explained to me that once the uterus is removed the ovaries float around the body and becos they are so small it is very difficult to locate them. I asked her to go ahead and try, sadly it didnt work. Kont still comes into season 2/3 times a year with all the problems that go with that. Pertev should have removed the ovaries with the uterus, he didn't. Sibel I trust completely.

For heavens sake ....stop this! I have used 2 of the three local vets i.e. Pertev,in whom I have total faith and Firdez..... who saved the life of my cat 18 months ago when she had been shot. I also only hear good reports of Sibel. I would have thanked God if when I was in the UK I had had the good fortune to have had 3 vets local to me in whom I had such faith. Like doctors these people do tremendous work................... so stop this!!!! Pertev is an excellent vet and person and he will always get my vote
