Councils will struggle to cope with the financial challenge posed by England's ageing population, a watchdog says. The Audit Commission said the £9bn a year social care bill will double by 2026 if current practices continue.

The warning comes as ministers are considering a revamp of the funding system for social care.

"We are acutely aware that the future will mean doing things differently to cope with an ageing population, developing new technology with less funding from the public purse and are already making huge strides to adapt to the future."

The report comes as the government prepares to publish detailed plans in the coming months into how social care should be funded.

See the Tories have called it a death tax, however its only an idea. All very easy for opposition to say what they are against but as usual, they are not forthcoming on what their own ideas are or the alternatives.

Did notice at the beginning of the week how slowly we are being prepared for another tax blow. They inform us that this might be the situation then the Gov fights back by saying they have no idea who leaked this. Oh yeah!!

Then the Gov a little further down the line say "well it is a good idea, think we will do it anyway"!!

It is just a softly softly approach to say we are about to be ripped off again. So what happens if we never needed any care in our old age, and at what age do they class as old age?

They state that if you don't use the Care Services you still have to pay, and someone whom has never saved and has no inheritance to leave anyone. Well they will be funded by someone else's legacy.

Will this BE a one off per household. I could own the house in my name, SO is this a head count who knows what they think? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8506877.stm

Does this mean we will be billed twice, I am sure not but who knows ? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8148116.stm

Why can't they claw back some of the money from the BANKS we have funded recently. You know the ones that are flaunting in our faces that they have made huge profits so the bankers will be getting their huge bonuses back.

It makes me so angry, that the ordinary person has no option but to give everything we own and have worked for to the Gov.

Taxed to death without more grabbing Government impositions. I can save millions, the money

into Age Care and Health Care for all the Pensioners who need and deserve it - not all in the same position. Includes Service Men/Woman who for many reasons cannot adapt to civilian life.

1) Get rid of these unelected quangos.

2) HSE to become what it was designed for - not stop kids playing conkers, just one of the ridiculous regulations imposed by frightened authorities by HSE nutters.

3) Get rid of thousands of "Jobsworths" all given jobs from the Guardian to take them off the unemployed list.

4) Reduce the Houses of Parliament to a representable Membership.

5) Government snoopers - Bin Police etc etc. Council ExecutiveSalaries to be assessed.

6) Although an admirer of the BBC, they have lost direction. Pull back an expanding empire and reinstate Greg Dyke. Immediate reduction in Licence Fee. Small Tax for under 70,s.

7)Kick the EU into touch followed by New Labour.

ANY MORE FOR

Gilken...sorry to here about your terrible financial situation I.E..."you have had to give everything to the government that you have worked for".Perhaps Del Boy and Rodney will give it back. One thing is for sure ,I doubt whether the other lot will change the rules concerning the banks.Too much party funding coming from that direction. Please come back in twelve months an tell me how much better off you are!!!!

The Government should encourage a more unhealthy lifestyle for the ederly.

rock climbing, eating puffer fish or demolition derby perhaps.

that should ilieviate some the financial burden

Is that you admitting that the 'other side' will be in, post the forthcoming election ?

Personally, I think that both parties spout such similar mandates that nothing much will change.

P.S. Where about in Stoke are you from. I originate from Fenton but my old mum lives in Kidsgrove.

Interesting that the United Kingdom Central Government and Local Authority Spending for the Fiscal Year 1695 was only £5million for defence.

welfare is only 105 billion. whereass the old biddies are sucking the government for a 119 billion a year.

the idle brigade are cheaper to keep than the elderly.

Changing the retirement age to 90 is another option then!

You must learn to work the Uk benefit system set up for life. Just leave it to the workers , these workers will take care of you from cradle to grave'' FACT' and all you have to do is study how to tick the boxes so to speak !!!

The real problem is that we have no "workers" making things to sell abroad. Manufacturing has ceased to exist.

So the "mustn't get our hands dirty - become service orientated" ideology of the 80s is now paying off big time.?!

Trouble is the skills we had have disappeared and we are really on a very slippery slope!

We will eventually retrograde back to pre" industrial revolution" times.

Off course that will not bother the wealthy in society.
