The most likely causes would be DNS problems or routing problems I would say. DNS is what turns 'tesco.com' into a numerical address. If for whatever reason tesco.com is not being 'resolved' into the right numerical address then you will have problems. What happens when you try and goto tesco.com ? Do you end up at a wrong site or just get 'site not available' (404) message ? You can check your dns resolution is correct by going start-run and then type in cmd and enter. This will open a window where you type ping tesco.com. It should resolve to 212.140.185.177 (dont worry about request timed out). This is the first thing to check imo. If it is resolving to the correct number then at least you no its not a DNS issue. Let us know your ping result and we can try and take it from there.

Ok we know you are resolving the numerical address ok. Try run-start , then type cmd in the window that opens type tracert tesco.com and post your result here

Actualy ignore that and try tracert nationwide.co.uk To be honest I am getting strange results when I trace to nationwide.co.uk, it ends with 'destination net unreachable' message yet I CAN reach the website ok. Similar wierdness with tesco.com , seem to drop into a 'no reply' hole, yet I can reach the site ok via browser. It is looking to me like routing problems outside of your machine. Prob the best you can do right now is email your ISP with your tracert results and explain you cant reach the site, and wait and hope.

Does look likely to me that the problem is actualy on BT's core network in the UK. Chances are they are sorting it out as we speak. Its a little stange that I can reach the two sites via iexplorer and you cant but I get stange tracert results to both sites, and both seem to go strange in a very similar 'place' tesco.com dies after 62.172.57.86 nationwide.co.uk reports destination 62.172.61.6 unreachable These are both BT machines. I would guess that both use BT for hosting and that the core problem is with BT. This is of course all guess work. Pings and tracerts to other machines in the UK that do not route via BT are working as they should from here for me like ice.cream.org

Hmm thats pointing back to Normans machine then. Norman are you using internet explorer ? do you have any other browsers installed like firefox or google chrome ? If you do have you tried these? If not you could try downloading one of them. This would show if the problem is with the IE or not.
