The world’s most powerful investors have been advised to buy farmland, stock up on gold and prepare for a “dirty war” by Marc Faber, the notoriously bearish market pundit, who predicted the 1987 stock market crash. The bleak warning of social and financial meltdown, delivered today in Tokyo at a gathering of 700 pension and sovereign wealth fund managers. Dr Faber, who advised his audience to pull out of American stocks one week before the 1987 crash and was among a handful who predicted the more recent financial crisis, vies with the Nouriel Roubini, the economist, as a rival claimant for the nickname Dr Doom. Speaking today, Dr Faber said that investors, who control billions of dollars of assets, should start considering the effects of more disruptive events than mere market volatility. “The next war will be a dirty war,” he told fund managers: "What are you going to do when your mobile phone gets shut down or the internet stops working or the city water supplies get poisoned

I think he meant in this context: "The best bet for investors may be to buy a farm and escape from the cities, as a prolonged recession could lead to war, as the Great Depression did, said the Swiss national, who now lives in Thailand. “Buy a farm and let your girlfriend work on the farm,” he said, to the applause of investors. “If the global economy doesn’t recover, usually people go to war.”

Reading the comments from the thread, it is clear that most think that buy buying farmland ect, they will be able to produce food ect, but if it is nuclear or poison war fare, the land, cattle, sheep, corn ect ect will become contaminated! So crops ect cannot be grown for 100s of years. After the Russian fall out years ago, cant remember the exact year, 20/25 yrs, there are still parts of Wales affected, some parts never will be able to produce food, remember that thousands of sheep became reactive! Never to go into the food chain. So dont all go rushing off to buy your farm, ........ it also has to be managed just like your other investments.....

Serious question............................. How do you think you would fare here in TRNC if something big kicks off Globally or even a few nuclear exchanges between Israel & Iran ?? How quickly would the locals turn on us if food supplies run low ?? I personally think there is no way back for the global economy as the debt is too big & can't be paid back & the next step is war or another 9/11 on a far huge scale. A bit depressing I know but I'm reading doom & gloom all over the place & when it gets talked about on a forum like this then it confirms my suspicions even more

I somewhat agree Jimmy. The global debt will get worse I fear. Whether or not it turns into a 'war' situation - who knows?

All of Cyprus would be a big blob of useless soil, if Israel and Iran let off nuclear stuff....... nobody will be left, and if they are, who would want to be left to try and survive.. Its more likely to be between N.Korea and others, so all go and enjoy what you have today.... Tomorrow never comes.....

Message 14/16 - to me, echoes of Vietnam - or am I being naive? Same old, same old, bloody 'gung-ho' Americans with, apparently more money than sense. Anyone remember the old song "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"? To me, there is never anything to be gained by war. OK - during WW2 - we were fighting (or at least, my Dad and many others' fathers ) for something that, at least, 70 odd years down the line, we could possibly see some reason for (I don't know, I wasn't born then). Message 16 - I would agree, but would you like to be more specific? With thanks.
