If it's EU neighbours fail to provide financial assistance, Greece will turn to the IMF. The Greek government is getting ready for another wave of strikes after it imposed a freeze on pensions, further cuts in public sector pay and increases in vat and duties on fuel, alcohol and cigarettes.

Whether its EU or the IMF to help them out, they will have to agree to stringent economic measures. I expect lots of riots but they will have to grow up and accept the bitter medicine. I don't see a change in government because the opposition will not have an alternative programme to offer. ismet

Wont be long now before we have the same situation in the Uk, Cameron seems to be cautious in wanting to win the forthcoming election knowing the poison challace Gormless Gord will be handing him will decimate Tory popularity. Get out of the Uk, and get out of sterling, before its to late. Leave the ruin to the asylum seekers and scroungers. D.N

Neither party actually want to win the election - why would you? There will be extreme measures taken whatever party get in. Doom and Gloom I fear for a decade or more.

Ismet I think the IMF will be a better solution for Greece as they will impose stricter fiscal rules than the EU are capable of doing. AJ

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Greece does not need financial aid after talks with Prime Minister George Papandreou in Berlin. She said Greece has not asked for financial support and that the stability of the eurozone is 'assured'. Athens saw its most serious unrest since the financial crisis began, as MPs passed austerity measures. Rock-throwing protesters outside parliament clashed with police, who used tear gas to disperse them.
