Why do people class the South side as the dark side.

Do you live in the North or the South.

I wouldn't waste my time on a forum for somewhere I didn't have an interest, so I must live in the north.

I am normally not narrow minded or racist, and am well travelled and have experienced the Greek people in several locations besides Cyprus. I was also here in 74!

If the "dark side is so bad why use it to fly in and out?

Especially Manchester which is catered for by CTA?

I don't understand why people call it the dark side and nothing good to say about the Greeks when they do not really know them, and they use the South to fly in and out from and always come here to do shopping etc. I am not trying to start an argument I am just curious after seeing what people have been saying on here for the past few weeks about the South when they do not really know the South.

Sorry quackers didn't mean to highjack your very sensible query, if it was the 21st I would have jumped at a share as we have family flying in. Using the South side airport for financial reasons and flying from London

Mikki09, I only use the South's airports because due to the restrictions placed on the North it's cheaper and more convenient, if it suited I would fly from the North as well. As for shopping I don't shop in the South, but every time I have been over the border (site seeing) both myself and my wife have met nothing but attitudes as previously mentioned. I have been to Athens and several other mainland greek places and unfortunately there has always been the same trend.

I have found the opposite. On a holiday to Crete the local bar owners asked if we would like to go the next day for a meal. I accepted and then next day we did not know what to expect may a pub meal. But when we got there we had a BBQ in the garden with the family. They then took us sight seeing and took us to an abandoned village called Milli. We went through the village and could see how they lived in the past. Then when we got to the end of the village we were at a church yard and all the graves were well attended and had lamps lit and fresh flowers on - so even though the village was deserted and abandoned the people still maintained the graves of their loved ones. We made good friends with Manos, Ranya and their wonderful son Dimitri and visited them on numerous occasions. Just a phone call and Manos arranged accommodation - Wonderful people on the island of Crete.

Katymackem. I totally agree with you. We spent many holidays (17 years or so) on various Greek islands and always, always, found the local people to be more than hospitable. We have had some wonderful times in Kos, Corfu, Crete, Kefalonia, etc. etc. The Greek people are very welcoming and love to have company and, indeed, made us very welcome. I have to say, also, that when we visited the South (it was a long time ago) we were, again, made very welcome. We have a holiday home in TRNC and we love the people here, but, I have to say, that apart from the very unpleasant words said by GC's at Larnaca Airport to our TRNC taxi driver (I speak little Greek, but I think everyone knows what I'm saying) I have found the GC's (particularly the older ones) to be more than charming. And, please, can everyone stop calling GC's "Greeks". There are Greek Cypriots and there are Greeks (they live in Greece - not Cyprus - unless they're on holiday )

I have spent plenty of time holidaying both north and south. I have been treated well by both sides. My belief is that any problems are mainly with the politicians and not the ordinary people. But this thread started on flights from Larnaca and as always when concerning the south side it has degenerated, SORRY.

Rigsby - you're right. Nothing's perfect of course, either side of the 'Attila Line' , but the economy of the south improved over time and they ploughed back a lot of the profits into the infrastructure etc. The basic difference between the two states is in the running of their economies and governance. ( IMO only ! )

The basic difference comes down to free trade and publicity. When either side is denied either thing then a difference will occur. The South has both and ensures the North has neither. What the people of the TRNC have accomplished having been cut off from the rest of the world shows such strength of character and dedication that it must stand out amongst other Nations. Sadly, it still fails to receive recognition and only bad publicity.

I agree, the TC's are survivors and all they want to do is get on with their lives. I must be niggling the GC's that there are still so many left on the Island.

Dear AJ..

utter nonsense..

Most GCs don't want TCs off the island .. I cannot say the same for Turks ... I know YOU know that many TCs feel the same about mainlanders ;)
