Just to make people aware, my brother-in-law was mugged just after midnight last night while he was on his way back to our house, after the football. He heard voices behind him and then someone hit him in the face knocking his glasses off and him to the ground ,they went through his pockets but left empty handed.. . His teeth went through his lip and he was knocked out and after alot of searching we found him wondering up the road this morning covered in blood. Nothing was taken as he had left his wallet, watch and mobile at the house and only had a few lira left in his shirt pocket. He says that the voices were foreign!!! I wanted to report the incident but he says that he is ok just shaken and he couldn't identify anyone as they came from behind. he is a 63 year old man and it has clearly shocked him and us. This is his first visit to TRNC and hopefully it won't put him off. It happened down on the main road!! We are now away to bed as it was a very very long night. Liz

liz w - I do hope your brother fully recovers from this very nasty attack. It's such a shame, particularly as this is his first visit to TRNC. We have been visiting for over 20 years and have never heard of anything like this happening before. I appreciate this is of no consolation to your family. I must say that I have always felt safe walking around after dark and would not have been afraid to do so on my own, but something like this does make you wonder if this is now the 'thin edge of the wedge'. We have a holiday home in Alsancak and have always felt perfectly safe. As I said, I do hope this is not the shape of things to come and I wish your brother all the very best. Regards. Jean

Liz . you must report this to the police straight away . The police are really on the ball in my opinion and this sort of thing would be zero tolerence to my mind . Please report this ASAP you could possibly be helping another mugging happening . I would imagine they would put extra patrolling in the area . Let us know the outcome please !!!

Liz, The police here are very efficient and are extremely keen to keep that reputation. Please report this immediately as the longer the time between the attack and the commencement of their investigation the harder it will be to identify the attackers.

My husband was 'almost' mugged in the church car park about 4 years ago, and all our friends told us off because we did NOT report it. It was dark, and the guy could have been anyone. But, I was told that one should report it because it can help build up a picture of who it might be and see if there is anypattern. So based on our experience of doing the 'wrong ' thing in not reporting, I would suggest that youshould do the 'right' thing and report it. There could be many others who have nOT reported, who if putting their stories with your brothers, could have helped the police catch the fella. The decision must be yours, but we were told that if we were truly public spirited, then we should report it. Over to you.

Liz please report this to the police, i can understand your brother in law thinking it is not worth it but it could save someone else suffering the same fate. The police will be very understanding.

Liz I hope your brother in law makes a full recovery. It is a horrible thing that has happened to him but he really must report it to the police, I know he feels he can't give them much in the way of descriptions but every little bit helps and even just making the police aware that this incident has taken place may just stop another mugging happening.

I am very sorry for what happened to your brother , I have been going to NC now for ten years and have never heard of this before. I have also felt very safe either in the day or the evenings in the TRNC. I just hope that this is an isolated incident but i very much doubt it . As previous posting have said, please report this asap to the police they may already have suspects. The sooner they are caught the better. Loui

Liz please think about what every one is asking you to do, report this incident....It might be someone else next week and that person might not be so lucky to get up and walk away. .. Hope your brother is feeling better, it must have been a horrible shock to his system.....

How dreadful for him liz, I hope he is now recovering from the shock. That does need to be reported to the police though, next time someone could be seriously injured or worse, would you not tell the police in the UK ? The police there are good at catching the B***ards, but they do need to made aware that there are these low lifes around.

I don't think Liz can ignore all the advice which is the same - REPORT IT TO THE POLICE and you could be doing a lot of people a favour. At least that could mean that the mugging was not totally in vain. So sorry to hear. Cos my husband was protected by me and my handbag (well, almost), and this kind of thing should never happen. So, go on - report it.

Liz, can you elaborate on where he was watching the football before this happened. We need to know and we need to put pressure on the relevant businesses to do something about this incident. I am sure they will have a good idea as to the culprits, However, first and foremost you must report this to the police.

my opinion you should always report a crime, next time they could kill somone what happens they get away with the crime the first time then get more violent until the inevitable happens I sincerely hope your brother makes a full recovery but for his sake and others this must be reported

When this happened to my son and his friend in Calgary they didn't want to report it either, but we just asked him "Did you enjoy the experience so much that you want other people to have it too? How will you feel if the next person isn't so lucky?" That seemed to focus them and they agreed to report it even though the attackers had threatened them with extreme violence if the matter was reported. How guilty will your brother in law feel if the next victim doesn't get up and walk away? I know it must be difficult if he is biting your head off but it really must be reported.

Those that did this attack won't be able to keep their mouths shut - these types never can - so the word is bound to be out. The cops know most of the crims here, because it's such a small place. Best to report this incident - even for the sake of others who might find themselves in the same predicament in the future. Your choice, of course, though!

PLEASE REPORT THIS ASAP x |

If you don't report this incident then you are acting in a really irresponsible way, a few harsh words from your brother in law is nothing compared to the guilt you would feel if it happens to someone else.

Liz, Being Devils Advocate, Flak Jacket On: Good night out, at the bar all night, wandering home on unfamiliar road. Was he pushed or did he fall. Either way, the shock of a nasty fall would leave him totally confused and wondering what the hell happened. Just a thought. I hope he is being seen by a Medic / Dentist.

I don't think it's a case of "if" but "when" They got away empty handed so it is highly likely they still need some dosh. Please report it, when they pounce on their next victim it may be fatal, may sound over the top but it was for my friends elderly father in the UK.

spondoolics, you have a point. The "pavements" are a nightmare at the best of times but at the moment they are deadly. I slipped on ice in the UK a few months ago and it's was a bit of a shock. Luckily I didn't bounce my head on the pavement but a nasty crack on the skull could leave you wondering what had actually happened. He was knocked out and that is definitely reason to see a doctor quickly as a friend fell off a horse and didn't got to the hospital until two days later only to discover that she had cracked a vertebrate which untreated could have seriously damaged her spinal chord.

Goodness,i walk up that way all the time [trying to get fit and loose some weight] .Sorry but you really should tell the Police asap, they can watch the area. I have never felt threatened at all since living here but now will think twice before jogging my way round the Merit and football grounds. If your brother had been a female on their own they could have been raped. I hope your brother is ok now, very frightening for him but YOU MUST REPORT IT,PLEASE.

Liz, If you look at Msg 28 you can see that already speculation has started. If there is no intention of reporting it to the authorities it would probably have been better not to have reported it here - so as to avoid (so far) baseless speculation and the collateral damage that can do to local businesses and individuals.

Re message 28 I will try and remain calm However, how on earth did you conclude it was MY bar the gentleman was in? The incident happened between Mare monte Road and the golden lady No1 knows what direction the gentleman was walking Comments like yours MotoMoto are not acceptable I was at MY bar for the match and yes will admit there was one Scottish gentleman called GEORGE who could fit the description of what happened, however having followed this thread from the start looked at our CCTV cameras and no foreign speaking customers (we only had 2 anyways) left our bar until some hours later after this client. I agree with all posts, Liz W this dreadful incident HAS to be reported to the police, next time could be even worse Sabena

Mssg 40 It did not sound like an accusation on your bar but there are only a couple of bars between Mare Monte and Golden Lady that have football on, and yours is one of them, don't take the comment personally. We come to your bar alot in the Summer, I think mssg 28 was just trying to establish were this gentleman had been watching the match.

Could someone tell me why LizW has not commented in this thread (my message is now 44) SINCE SHE wrote No.1? I have written to her personally, but maybe she hasn't bothered to read this thread following the initial posting, but why? So many people have said 'report to the police' urging her or the man in question to accept some responsibility towards the community, or is it, and I hate to even THINK about it - a wind up???? So come on LizW - SAY SOMETHING. Does everyone agree with me - or not - or what????

MarieB She did respond in msg 22 saying that she was getting her head bitten off for trying to get her brother in law to report it to the police. I really hate to say it but like you I wonder if he has told her the whole truth about the incident. If that is the case she cannot be held responsible for her initial posting. My initial reaction was that surely someone would have seen him in the condition he was in after this attack and would have assisted him. I sincerley hope that whatever has happened and only he can know, he will make a speedy recovery.

| I know someone who would get home in this stated every week-end..and he would loose his teeth at the same tree each week where he would be sick..come morning he would return for them..I hate to imagine what state he would go home in the early hours of the mornings torn, bleeding and toothless.!! penny less too i would imagine. What sort of story would he give his wife as he never remembered much either..Oh yes i do feel for this man,but if he is not going to the police what can Liz w do,nothing.maybe the next incident will be in the cyprus today...so for the people who may often go home in a terrible state after a night out it could be you... | Oops, silly me for looking too quickly, and missing message 22. I agree with all of you, and I feel sorry for Liz as obviously her intentions were good, to warn us all of possible danger, but it does rather look like a 'cry wolf' situation. Whatever the truth, Liz did the right thing, but not reporting it is the 'wrong' thing, unless of course the entire incident was reported to Liz incorrectly. And I agree with an earlier posting, it is not right to bring into bad repute any local business or organisations. I guess we will never learn the truth. Again apologies for not seeing message 22, but I had received e mails from folk questioning the REAL truth of the story. Guess now, we have to assume - and that is always dangerous. |

It seems a shame if the one place to which we have come because it is 'safe' should now be a place where one dare not feel safe. But I am sure this has to be an isolated incidence, just as the one with my husband three years ago was never repated in Kyrenia centre. By the way ParkView it was Gordon Kent who spoke of 'ill repute' etc. I am not c\asting any stones, but merely repeated that this should not happen. There are more than enough Chinese Whispers around this place, but although I know Liz is telling it as she knows it to be, obviously others on this board think it is 'untrue'. Obviously the incident is true, but the truth around it is a bit hazy. But all forgotten now, and the brother in law and family will be back again and happy to be so. So, whoever it was who came out of the darkness is obviously unknown and will remain so. But it is good that people are concerned about others - so that is a good thing out of it.

The main issue for me here is this . I visit North Cyprus around 4 times a year and contemplate visting for longer as i love the place . The main reason me and my family are considering longer stays is the fact that we always feel safe . Now when we have these sort of threads with hazy feedback it reallys gets up by back when it throws me into thinking ''crikey' is this the beginning of the sort of crime I wish to get away from. Bearing in mind I am resident in very rural place with very litttle crime . So I do hope there is closure to this thread with the thought that unless the police are informed regarding the first post. Then for me i shall just question the post , and hope these threads to not come up unless there is a positive outcome like getting the police involved . For me North Cyprus muggings do not occur unless i am proved wrong by muggings coming to light and reported to the police .

Hopefully this won't end up like the alleged attempted child abduction case which ended up in UK newspapers despite the parents never having reported the case to the local police.

Has anybody actually and reliably attempted to ascertain the victim's total alcohol consumption prior to the alleged incident - surely the barman would be able to provide some information? To get down to the 'nitty-gritty' - is the victim known to 'imbibe in excess', or 'be of sober habits'? If the former - how does he behave 'under the affluence of incahol'?

Liz W, If your brother-in-law was knocked out he should not only inform the police but seek medical attention also, as a blow to the head (head injury) often manifests itself later. He could be suffering concussion. By taking him to hospital there is also a record of the assault there just in case he needs the evidence at a later date. Chris

RE msg 58, Groucho: (...) "He says that the voices were foreign" Please elaborate... (...) => Breaking news: the culprits are known now. This was obviously an anti-British act and the voices were foreign. The attackers must have been Dutch. I agree with Gordon (msg 37) that msg 1 should not have been posted as it is useless (no police involvement), damaging to TRNC and local business. Not one serious news paper in the world would spend one line on this "incident" - but on this Bulletin Board people are free to write unproven "reports" as often as they want. Msg 1 deserves a laugh as a bad April 1 joke.
