I did find mine in Super Home Centre in the south.

They had them at what I considered to be a reasonable price I seem to remember but I'd be interested to know if they can be had in the north.

Pumice will also do the job just as well. Plenty on the beach at Akdeniz!

Jetski you are right... I've noticed what appears to be lots or larva rock in Esentepe and thought that's got to be ideal for barbecue use.

There are a couple of brands of "Fire Lighters" as they are called in almost all the supermarkets. They are smalle cubes soaked in paraffin or something like that. Ideal for lighting charcoal or the chimney.

Elko,

I wouldn't touch these lighter blocks with a bargepole! They leave a long lasting smell of paraffin on your barbecue to taint the food and mean you must wait a long time to start cooking.

I prefer to use Saf Ispirto. I'm sure you are aware of this product but for those who don't, I'm told the locals call it 'match' as that's what they use it for... it's also a really good solvent for sticky marks etc. and has multiple cleaning applications. e.g. I use it to remove paint spots from the marble....

When used as a BBQ accelerant, it burns better and lights the BBQ really quickly. You sprinkle it onto the charcoal and light it with a long paper taper or spill...

Warning: It must be used with care however as it is liquid and goes up like petrol! If you spill it on yourself make sure it's all evaporated before you attempt to light the BBQ or get someone else to do the deed.

Being pure spirit, it does not leave any nasty smells no matter what you are using it for.

Any of the local volcanic rocks will do - the pumice, the pillow lava (the brown stuff you see in Gecitkoy gorge, at Balalan and above Karsiyaka, next to the hill road to Kozan). All most commercial brands consist of a mixture of reconstituted slate and ceramic so don't waste your money - after all, many native peoples (and Aussies) have been cooking on hot rocks for hundreds of years.

Pumice stone actually floats... so to test if it is pumice put your rocks in water! Joke for NN

Wont putting them in water make them difficult to light?
